Default Did you ever have bad weather on vacation?

We have had some great weather on vacations. And some bad weather.

For example, we hit San Antonio this fall. It was 95, with about 99% humidity.

We struggled through a trip to the zoo. And 6 Flags. And the Alamo.

But I wonder if we should have had backup plans -- INDOORS.

What do you do when you're on vacation and the weather isn't cooperating?

We went to Florida about the time Hurricane Andrew was around. We had lots of fun gift-shopping.

LOL, just thinking about this makes me laugh. Years ago, when I was a kid.....actually, it was 1982 to be exact....... we went to the World's Fair in TN. We were camping with my aunt and uncle, me, my sister (only had one then!) and my parents.... all in two tents on the side of a mountain. Well, a big thunderstorm arrived, meaning that everything and everyone was soaked. The men were supposed to be cooking a meal, and they burned some potatoes.... which they then tried to remedy with rain water and squirting easy cheese on them.

Thanks for making me think of that trip, lol, I needed a good laugh this morning.

But, anyways, back to your question.... DH and I only book hotels with indoor pools if we can. Then, if the weather is bad, we stay at the hotel, order pizza, and lounge around the pool.

But wouldn't you feel as if it were a wasted trip? I mean, to go to San Antonio and NOT see the Alamo?

We were in Florida visiting my dh's mother, and two different times we had a tornado very close to where we were. The one time it touched down about 5 miles from where she lives and dh and ds1 were in the area where it touched down because they were out getting dinner. The other time we out ran a tornado that was behing us, and somehow it turned and we ended up pulling into a gas station that had no power because the tornado just had gone through about 5 minutes prior to us arriving. Talk about freaking out!! I was a basket case.

Well, in our situation, no.  We rarely get to take "real" vacations-- usually it's just a weekend getaway somewhere within an hour or two drive from our home.  And, we don't do active vacations with tons of sightseeing. (That might change, but with a two year-old, sightseeing isn't much fun right now!)    For us the "vacation" part is just getting away from work and having some time to relax with our family.

If you're sightseers, though, and taking a major trip like that, then, yes, I would look up some alternate plans that can be done indoors.  Museums? Shopping?

    OH-- lots of times.

Took the kids camping one year, and hit a WEEK of rain- - we finally gave up and came home (to a house with no bathroom, Inlaws decided to remodel it while we were gone, and our early homecoming was a surprise)

Took the kids to a water park one year- remembered to slather sun screen on everyone, including the ears--- BUT forgot to do the feet, and we were wearing aqua shoes. DH and I got sun poisoning. Kids were fine. That made for an interesting vacation-- both adults vomiting (in a motor home), swollen, blistered feet- no AC. UGH.

Went camping in Canada one year- it was 114 degrees here when we left. . . . but where we were staying, it was in the 40's. we nearly froze! We only had a couple long sleeved shirts. (and we always camp)

We have always been pretty lucky with the weather. But one year when we went to Disney World, we had rain morst days. We just made the best of it and bought ponchos there. Can't believe Jack wore one, but he was a real trooper.

Many years ago I went to Bermuda (my fav place) because I needed to get away. I had just removed myself from a negative relationship. It was raining when I left the US. When I arrived in Bermuda the weather was nice, then the storms came. It was Bermuda's rainy season Usually I enjoy rain, no matter how strong. I was near the water and it was scary; probably because I was already depressed.

I was away about 3 weeks ago and we had more heavy rain. I was near the ocean but I was fine this time.

Yes, everytime we have gone camping in a tent, we have been rained out. I refuse to camp in a tent again.

We also got caught in snow once while travelling in early Oct.

Otherwise we've been pretty fortunate on vacations.

CJ, I laughed when I read about your camping My DH used to be involved with scouting when my Sons were little. Every time they would have a camping trip it rained. I mean EVERY time!

When DH and I took a trip to AMelia Island Fl a few years ago there was a hurricane, not bad enough to evacuate. I would hate to see a bad one.
