Anyone here live near Columbia, SC?
Another vacation possibility for us........... the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC.
If anyone lives in or near this area, I'd love some suggestions on hotels and other attractions in the area and advice on areas of the city we should avoid. Thanks!

If you have a zoo with a siberian tiger, ds1 will drag us there! Our whole vacation is being planned around him seeing a tiger in person, specifically a siberian tiger if possible. LOL The Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia is the closest one to us that I've found so far.

Oh darn, can't do it then. No Siberian Tiger, and even though the neighbors cat IS large, I dont' think it would work as a substitute.

You are one terrific mum and homeschooler Kim!

I don't live close about 3 hours for me, but the Zoo is fantastic, it's been a couple of years since I've been but really want to take the grandkids this summer.

I love the Columbia Zoo, we were stationed at Charleston AFB before this assignment.
I sure miss it. I really miss feeding the birds!!!
There is no zoo in Spokane , the closest one is in Seattle, about 4 hours away and across the mountains.

Melanie and Angie - How would you rate the area immediately surrounding the zoo? Nice? Safe? I have found a couple of hotels that meet our needs and they are in that area, but dh and I have no idea if that is a good area to stay or not.

I think the area is quite nice, I didn't see any "bad" areas.
Are you plannning to see other attractions in that area?
I can give you some suggestions.
Have a great day!

Thank you! If by chance you know anything about the areas around Columbiana Mall or near Ft. Jackson, I'd love some feedback. I have found a hotel near each of them that meets our needs.
I have been looking at a visitors bureau site online and ds1 thought the EdVenture Children's Museum looked fun. Any suggestions you have of museums, etc. would be great. Ds1 will be 7 then and as Margery mentioned, we're homeschoolers, so educational and fun is what this trip is all about.

I can't help much with the hotels as we always drive own and back the same day. i love the mall, it's huge, compared to our near by ones and most of the area near the mall and the zoo seems safe.
The closer you get to ft.jackson the worse the traffic and stuff seems, mom and dad go down to fill perscriptions and visit the px a lot.
