What Places in Arizona and New Mexico
Dh and I will be going to the Tucson AZ area, plus we'll be driving into New Mexico and visiting Las Cruces, Silver City and Albuquerque. Does anyone have any suggestions of sites/places that we should visit when we're in those areas and any places that you recommend to stay? Also, if there is any areas/places that we should be staying away from.
We are flexible in our travels except we want to attend a couple Albuquerque Isotopes games, dates not yet determined.

We have a home in Southwest Tucson. It is really pretty there.
The Casino Del Sol is real nice, if you like casinos.
Tombstone is ok, not that great IMHO.

We were just in Arizona a couple of weeks ago.
In the Tuscon area there is lots to see. Tombstone for instance is only about 30-40 minutes from Tuscon, but you want to stay in Sierra Vista. There are more hotels there and a larger variety of places to eat. There ARE hotels in Tombstone, just not alot of them and if you like the old west thing there is a really cool B&B right on Allen Street (downtown Tombstone). It was lots of fun for the kids and I.
Also down there is Bisbee, which has more old west stuff going on. We didn't make it down there but a friend who live in Tuscon highly recommended it. Also there is Boot Hill Cemetary. There is Kartchner Caverns, living caves (you know with the bats and other cave animals still living there), Ft. Huachuca which was one of the first places that a troop of Buffalo Soldiers was sent. There's the Queen Copper Mine. And tons of other stuff that I can't remember off had.
Also, if you are wanting to drive back north towards Phoenix for a day or two, then there is the Superstition Mountains and the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine tours. They take you out into the desert in Jeep tours through the mountain range. REALLY cool.
Anyway, hope that gave you some ideas.
Hugs,
Deb

Thank you for the suggestions. Tucson sounds like a great area.
We are now planning on being in Tucson for three days but it sounds like there is so much to do there, that three days might not be long enough.

In Las Cruces go to Mesilla. It's an old town with really cute shops, historical churches, and a really wonderful restaurant, La Posta. There is also the NM Heritage Farm & Ranch Museum it has a restaurant also. It's been several years since I've been there, but they had a chili relleno that is coated in crushed pecans that was delicious. If you go north of town, near Radium Springs, there is Fort Seldon. The remains and museum of an old frontier fort. It's a quiet place to spend an afternoon for a picnic. Also my favorite bookstore is in Las Cruces, COAS. It is an awesome used bookstore. Las Cruces is also near White Sands National Monument. Miles of beautiful gypsum sand. (I'm getting homesick now)
If you have time, you could go to Alamogordo. It has the International Space Museum, a small railroad museum, and little zoo. Also If you go up into the mountains there is Capitan, where Smokey the Bear is buried and Lincoln where Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett hung out.
If you need anymore info on Las Cruces, let me know.

Thank you Beverly for the NM info. I love NM and love the food so I'm really looking forward to our time there. Do you know anything about Silver City?

The big site in Silver City is the Gila National Forest and the Gila Cliff Dwellings (a must see). They have several other historic sites (Fort Bayard, City of Rocks). If your family is into outdoorsy stuff and history you'll definitely find something to do. Look them up online before you go. There always seems to be some festival going on somewhere in NM.
BTW If you have time go a bit out of the way to Carlsbad. The caverns are awesome. When are you going? These links may help you plan your trip.

We'll be there next month. Looks like the weather will be really nice compared to what we have been getting here in Northern Ca.

Lucky you. We're not going back to NM for our annual trip until late July. My parents are in Alamogordo and mom said it is really starting to heat up there. It's supposed to be in the 90's this week.
