    Default Costa Rica?

We have family there and are thinking about going around Christmas time. Any ideas on what to see and how to get around down there? Dh is a history and woodworking buff. I'm an arts and crafts person. I'm thinking we'll have to rent a car...if that's how they get around down there. I know *nothing* about Costa Rica!

It's been 15 years since I was there, it is a beautiful place. We rented a car and drove to each place we visited. I really like the Monte Verde Rain Forest, you must see it. I am sure the very small town has grown , since it is more touristy now.
There are also volcanos to see, beaches, whitewater rafting , fishing, all depending on which area you are going to. We saw wild monkeys everywhere too as we drove along the dirt roads. Oh, the roads are awful, don't drive at night. You never know where there are huge holes in the road or it part of the road is gone. Be careful driving, and learn a bit of Spanish so when you get lost you can ask directions.
I hope to visit there again someday.

I would drop by my local Books A million and page throught on of the travel books there. I know my store allow you to sit and look as long as you like. I'd take my trusty notepad with me. Perhaps your libaray has some travel books you could check out.

Spanish? Oh dear. Me and languages don't mix well at all! I don't even know how big Costa Rica is. I guess I really need to do some research! Thanks.

If you aren't positive about Costa Rica, you may want to consider Panama. (One country south of Costa Rica) The official language is English, but most people speak at least a fair amount of English. A large number of American military were stationed there in the past and they are glad to see Americans "return" for tourism.

There is so much to do, 2 oceans with beaches (I prefer the Pacific side), lots of shopping, PanamaCanal tours, rain forst trecks, volcano ruins, tons of unique animal and plant species, etc. Its awesome and pretty cheap for food and lodging. I've been there twice and therr'e still so much to do.

The currency is called a balboa, but its really just American dollars. Panama does not print any paper currency. They do have their own coins, but everything is the same size as US coins and the two types are completely interchangeable even in vending machines.

I just realized that my previous post assumed that you were from the US. Sorry. Please don't bash me for not thinking before posting.

That's okay. I've made that mistake too. I happen to be a typical Canadian...I have tons of American coinage and bills in a jar on my kitchen shelf!LOL Just for when we decide to shop south of the border.
