Anyone been to/from the Outer Banks?
My DFamily has chosen to go to the Outer Banks on vacation this summer. There is 14 of us. We've rented a house. We'll be there for a week. Just wondering if there are any places we should be sure to visit. Any great eating places. We are definitely visiting the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, which is the tallest lighthouse in the US. I would love to see the wild mustangs. Any ideas? TIA!

I'm sitting here with the North Carolina 2007 travel guide in my hands, LOL.
Go here: www.877.OBX.4FUN.outerbanks.org
There are several awesome aquariums along the North Carolina coast. There is one on Roanoke Island, Pine Knoll shores, and Fort Fisher. Check them out here. www.aquariumcarolina.com The Roanoke Island aquarium would be located on the outer banks.
The Ocracoke Lighthouse on Ocracoke Island is one of the oldest on the Atlantic Ocean.
I'm not sure exactly when you are going, but go here to request this travel guide. www.visitnc.com
Have a wonderful trip and remember we want to see pics!

Thanks, MarshHen. My DMother signed up for some visitor information and has been getting loads of things. They have been helpful. I love to hear of first hand experiences others have had. Some of my clients have been and I haven't heard one bad thing about the place, yet. I'm excited. I went to the aquarium site and the visit nc site, but the other link wouldn't work for me.
Laurie, I read about Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers in one of the pamphlets my DMother received. I hope we get a chance to check that out. My DD17 loves history.Last edited by emily_hope; 06-12-2007 at 08:09 PM.

The Outer Banks are really cool! If you can, try to visit the northern end near Duck and Corolla, where Hwy 12 runs out. Where the road ends, the land is preserved as a wild horse sanctuary. If you want to see the mustangs that area is a good bet. It's really neat, and it's quite exhilarating to be on such a small strip of land, having the ocean on one side and a calm and shallow, but vast sound on the other side. There is a cool little place to eat called the Pine Island Diner. It's set up like a 50's style diner, but it's not a greasy spoon, that's just the motif. Hope you enjoy your visit!

We vacationed right near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and loved the outer banks. We visited Ocracoke (sp) one day. We took the fairy over and spent time on the beach there and ate at the Pelican restaurant (that was 10 years ago, not sure if that restaurant is still there). I hope you have fun, that is one of my favorite places

When we've gone we usually just hang on the beach, rent kiacks, shop outlets in Nags Head.

We are leaving for the Outer Banks tomorrow. We will be home on Sunday. I was rechecking all the tips everyone had posted. Thanks, again!
