We also have a cross lake ferry that can take you to Wisconsin! The Muskegon area also has a lot of different festivals throughout the Summer. In the UP near the Wisconsin border there the the Porcupine Mountains (although I have no idea how they get away with "mountains" ), but it is a very beautiful area. If it were me I'd do a round robin of the UP...we used to do that every year...funny thing was a waitress who served us in the UP had just got back from...Muskegon ! Thought it was quite comical that she went to our area & we came to hers!

I have been lucky enough to visit Milwaukee 3 times now, due to a Dutch friend who married an American.

    I liked Milwaukee very much.

You can always go and see the Brewers play.

Have been to Green Bay as well, but only to visit the stadium (very nice) and have lunch with someone I met on another board.

    Thumbs up southern Michicgan

Saugatuk Mi is a great place to go also. There are many fruit and orchards in this area. Lots of antiques shops. And a casino in New Buffalo. Beautiful beaches in this area. Get a Michigan travel book and it will give you lots of info

Since I was born, we vacationed almost every year in Traverse City, MI. My family has a cabin there, so I have been very, very lucky that my grandma has always let us use her cabin on the lake.

It is beautiful there, tons to do, too. There is a children's museum, a small zoo, the Cherry Festival (but only if you like TONS of people). It can get pricey, but if you like to camp, or you go a little further out to Elk Rapids (which I think is 30 minutes north), the hotel rates get a bit cheaper. But I know you need to book way in advance. It is touristy, in the sense that there is alot to do, but not too touristy in the cheesy sense. My kids love the museum and the zoo. And there is a college there that has lots of things going on during the weekends, outdoor art shows and things like that.

Every year a group of us takes our boats up to Torch Lake, which is about 30-45 minutes north of Traverse I believe. Torch Lake has THE bluest, cleanest water I have ever seen! We normally stay at the Motel 6 on what we call "ths strip" of Traverse. It runs about $99.00 a night. We love to go to Boone's! If you never been there, you HAVE to go. It is a little pricey, but the prime rib is to die for and HUGE! LAst year we didn't take the boat and stayed at the Interlochen State park...omg!! we had a blast!! Traverse Pie Company is the best also! Oh my goodness there is just so much to do in Traverse City, I wish I could live there!

Visit Frankenmuth, MI....It's a cute little German influenced tourist town. I go every year when we go to visit the inlaws.

We got to go thru dairy farms and cheese factories and see how all this is made. The scenery is beautiful. They also have festivals at various times of the year with polka dancing on the street. We enjoyed it to the hilt and would go back in a heartbeat.
That would be New Glarus and it is really a great place to visit!

Thanks for the advice everyone! We have finally decided to do this in the second weekend of September (Fri-Wend). We are thinking about spending some time at Kohler-Andrae State Park and maybe driving up to see a little of Door County. We have to spend sometime in Chicago, I think on Tues-Wends.
