We don't make a big deal of the holiday, but by that time in February I'm ready to celebrate something! I usually make heart cookies, I've also made a huge heart shaped chocolate chip cookie and heart shaped pizza. I might string up some paper hearts. Dh and I might watch a movie or have a nice dinner after sending the kids to bed or their rooms. It's more about doing little things for kids here than romance.

DH and I don't normally observe Valentine's Day. Last year, he was in Michigan for a business trip.
This year, we'll be spending the day at a 5 star resort in Cancun. Not because it's Valentine's Day, but because I need a vacation and wanted to go before gardening season is here. I can't wait, this is our first vacation in 5 years.

What would make your Valentine's day special?
To me it's really no big deal..
What have been your best Valentine's day gifts?
My best Valentine day present came 1 day early in 1997..DS
Your worst?
Same DS above sick and ended up being put in the hospital last year..and having surgery on the day after Valentines
How do you wish it was spent?
Anywhere but the hospital.
What do you give your partner?
Candy or a card..
Do you give your kids anything for Valentine's day?
CandyBear..You left
prints on our hearts..

valentines day 2009
so here comes another one... what do you and your significant other do for the occasion? do you exchange gifts...go out to eat ?
df and i only do cards...i naturally get mine for 50 cents at the dollar general...he goes to the pharmacy and pays 5 bucks for one...almost the cost of my meal at my favorite local mexican rest....
i'm trying to break him of it...but he doesn't know we are being frugal....
usually go out to eat but i'm thinking maybe i could make a really cool interesting heart shaped type meal.... giant red meatloaf maybe...ha... any ideas ????

I love the heart shaped meatloaf idea. Here are a few more ideas to complete your heart shaped meal.

You could always make potato pancakes shaped into a heart using a heart shaped cookie cutter. It would need to be a metal one though because of the heat of the pan. Use tongs to lift away from pan.
Or place a heart shaped cookie cutter on the dinner plate and fill one with mashed potatoes and one with stuffing. Carefully lift away from plate.
You could freeze those little gummy hearts in ice cubes to add to your clear drink, maybe lemon lime soda in champange flutes.
I would set the table with a white/pink/red sheet. Add candles and scatter the table with those sweet little Valentines day hearts or gummy hearts.
Enjoy you Valentines Day!

we don't do anything. it's a commercialized "holiday" anyways. we're each others "valentines" every day so we don't need a separate day for it. it's silly making people feel as if they HAVE to give cards and chocolates, and go out to eat, all for the greed and profit of corporate america.

We agreed years ago, not to ever spend money on valentine's day. And it has become our tradition to have spaghetti every year since it is red, and when we first moved in together, it was the only "red food" I knew how to cook!

We don't make a big deal of it since our anniversary is in the same month. It is always acknowledged but each time is different. However, never is it anything large scale. I agree that it's a very corporate pushed type holiday. However, I also think it's wonderful to have another reminder to help us remember to acknowledge those that are special to us.
I will probably make my kids something they really like to eat for dessert or breakfast that day. As well, I'll make sure to stick an I love you note in thier lunch.
I will also make sure to make phone calls to people like my grandmother and aunt who live alone.
For DH I have been hard at work on a stack of index cards that I will put in an index card box and wrap up for him. They will be coupons and sentiments. Each one will say something different. Examples:
coupons
~ Night off of dish duty
~ Back massage
~ Dinner of your choice
~ Love slave for the evening
~ 2 hours undisturbed
sentiments
~ There is no one else for me.
~ In case I've forgotten to tell you lately - I love you for everything you are.
~ SMOOCH!
and so on.
There are about 200 cards. I found the new pack of cards and the index box burried in the attic. Along with that I will probably make something I know he enjoys for dinner and make sure the kids go to bed on time.

We usually go out for dinner, and exchange cards or hand written notes.

last year i bought a bright pink monkey with big long arms that velcro'd together from the dollar store and hung it from dh's rear-view mirror before he left for work....when he saw it he yanked it down and said "i am NOT driving down the road with that thing hanging in my car".. needless to say I am now the proud owner of the bright pink money.....

Dh and I don't do anything but I do try to make it a little celebratory at home. We have heart shaped pizza, heart shaped cookies and a few decorations, maybe candles on the table.
