Son and family coming over for supper and games. Having chili and toasted cheese sandwiches, celery, and pickles. Banana cream pie dessert. Come on, guys, I'm hungry!

    What is Sailor Spaghetti?

We're having a change from the usual appetizers. Instead, we are doing anti-pasta, seafood lasagna, and some veggies. We'll snack on cheese, bean dip, roasted red pepper dip, and crab rangoon dip. Yum!

I got a couple KC strip steaks and stuffed baked potatoes for tonight. For later in the evening I'll be making sweet potato chips, baked brie, pigs-in-blankets, and pita chips to go with the hummus I made earlier. I think there will also be carrot sticks and dip, and a box of Russel Stover chocolates.

We had a really lovely and simple meal that was practically free!

Wanted to try something special but different, so we did a whole red snapper baked in sea salt. The fish was pricey (about $20 from Whole Foods) but the day before we had unexpectedly sold a book on Half.com for the exact cost of the fish!

We had roasted potatoes and a simple salad as well (both unopened leftovers from Christmas my parents gave us) and I whipped up a sour cream chocolate chip cake since i had everything on hand.

I figure even if we had bought everything it still would have been cheaper than paying for a semi-decent sit down dinner for two anywhere in town!

    Chili and cornbread.

I've heard it's traditional to have beans on NYD, so I usually make some kind of bean dish.

Yes, I am curious about Sailor Spaghetti too.... spaghetti with tuna instead of hamburger????

We always have black-eyed peas for New Year's Day. So we are having Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas, rice, bacon, celery leaves, onion, garlic) and sausage.
