Druth - am so glad that you started this thread today - your excitement and enthusiasm makes me smile - and your bread looks terrific!!

I am making White chicken chili in the crockpot today - everything from scratch - so I am making chicken broth from the bones from last night's chicken, finishing off cooking the dried beans - feel so good about this homemaking stage!!

Okay - a quick reality check - that funny smell was the pot of beans - cooking away - without water!! Not much loss, but shall be scrubbing that Dutch oven out a lot!!

Well, it didn't brown exactly like I expected...but then again, the picture I looked at had an egg wash on it I *think.* I did try to do the slash marks on the top, but quite frankly....my knives suck (that is what I requested for Christmas lol) and so I gave up on the slashes before I did something bad And it's a bit flatter than it probably should be....but it tastes fine and it's done throughout so I can't really complain

Druth - bread is one of those foods with character - who wants 'perfect looking store bought bread finish'? Your loaf gets my vote as wonderful!!

Replace part of your regular flour with , 1/4 wheat flour in your recipe next time and it will give you the brown you are looking for. But it looks beautiful and artisan to me.
