Patience Corner Tutorial

E-mail Print PDF

Special thanks to CJ AKA Homesteadmamma

You'll need:

- 2 prints
- 2 darks
- 2 med. colors

First we need to make sure our material is washed and dried as we did in our other blocks. Once pressed, we then need to cut off the selvage edges on our material, if you haven't already done so. I'm going to give you a link to check out for washing, pressing and trimming instructions so that I don't have to repeat all the pictures again. Please make sure you have done this before starting this block Please check quilting prep 101 and the Nine patch tutorial to read prepping instructions.

When finished your block will measure 12 1/2 inches and look like the following picture.

This is a very short tutorial and a very simple pattern. Again, its all in the layout so watch carefully how you lay your pieces.

Cut:

With your one print pattern and one med. color, 2 ea. 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangles

With your other print and a dark color, cut 2 ea. 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangle

With your dark color and medium color cut 2 each 4 1/2 inch squares.

With your pieces in hand, lay out exactly as in the following picture on your large ruler or large piece of cardboard, making sure you follow the exact layout. This can be a bit tricky, so double check a couple of times with the pictures I've already posted.

We're going to sew this in 4 blocks and then sew the 4 blocks together. I found it easier to do one block first, then the next until I got the 4 blocks finished.

Will do the first block on the first row first. Take your dark color square and your short print (2 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. rectangle) and sew together. Press toward your dark color.

Take what you've just finished and sew your 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangle (print) to this. Press.

Do the exact same thing with your other 3 blocks, making sure once sewn and pressed, you return back to the same way you took them out. Double check and double check again.

Your 4 blocks should now look like this.

This block is pretty forgiving when it comes to sewing it all together. The only thing you need to line up, are the outside edges of your top left block and your bottom right block (in the middle of the full block).

First, sew the top 2 blocks together, press. Next, sew the bottom 2 blocks together, press.

Take both rows and line up the prints (2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangles), making sure the seams are opposite each other and fit together when pinned. Pin the middle first, then towards the outward edges.

Sew and press. Square as you have in all your other blocks. This block should be almost bang on. There really shouldn't be much error when it comes to the 12 1/2 if you've cut your pieces exact.
