Barbecues: Gas or charcoal

With the summer months fast approaching many are turning their attention to preparing for the much anticipated warm weather. For many the warm weather means lots of barbecues but before enjoying the outdoor food you must make the decision of whether to buy a gas barbecue or a charcoal barbecue. Both options have their plus points and their negative points and the choice really comes down to individual preference and how much it is likely to be used. Either way, food is all but guaranteed to be enjoyed on a barbecue, whether gas or charcoal.

Charcoal barbecues

Charcoal barbecues are great for the taste, smells and atmosphere that they produce. There is simply nothing quite like the taste of meat cooked on a barbecue. Charcoal is certainly the tradition barbecue of choice and creates an experience so different to that of cooking indoors. However, charcoal barbecues require a degree of preparation prior to lighting and certainly create more mess than other types. Moreover, the temperature of a charcoal barbecue cannot be adjusted with any accuracy and it cannot be simply switched off after cooking but instead must cool down over a period of time. That said, in the eyes of some many of these disadvantages would be seen as advantages or attractions. Charcoal barbecues really lend themselves to infrequent outdoor cooking during the summer months where the novelty value of cooking on coal can be greatly appreciated.

Gas barbecues

The main advantage of gas barbecues is the convenience that they offer. Prior to lighting they do not require any preparation, nor do they require time to cool down. They can be simply switched on and off. This level of convenience means that a gas barbecue can be used more regularly without the time implications of a charcoal barbecue. Moreover, gas barbecues do not create any mess. The temperature of a gas barbecue can be adjusted as easily and as accurately as when cooking indoors. Gas barbecues by no means have the same amount of ambience as charcoal barbecues but they do offer high levels of simplicity. Gas barbecues are just as convenient to use whether cooking two rashers of bacon or cooking for family and friends. Gas barbecues therefore lend themselves to warmer climates where outdoor cooking is not so much a novelty but more a way of life.

As stated at the outset the decision as to whether to choose a gas barbecue or a charcoal barbeque is really a matter of personal preference. You must decide the reason for why you are buying the barbecue. If they enjoy the smell, taste and atmosphere created by a barbecue once in a while then a charcoal barbecue is likely to be the option of choice. However, if you are more concerned with practicality including the speed of cooking time and the preparation required prior to cooking then a gas barbecue is likely to be the option of choice, especially if you live in warmer climates.
