Simple Ways to Get Started with Frugal Living

Life is expensive, there’s no denying it. But there are plenty of easy things you can do to simplify your life and reduce your spending. Keep reading to learn some simple ways to get started with frugal living.

Mistakes to Avoid Getting Started

Making the decision to simplify your life is admirable and a great way to save money. It definitely isn’t easy, however, which is something that many people fail to realize. It takes a lot of time and planning to significantly change your lifestyle – especially if you want those changes to be sustainable. Before you jump into a new frugal lifestyle, take a moment to learn about some of the mistakes people make so you can avoid making these same mistakes yourself.

If you have ever done any research into frugal living, you may have heard the advice that you have to make a certain financial investment in order to get started with your new, frugal lifestyle. For example, you might need to purchase the supplies to build a garden so you can grow your own produce or you might invest in more ecofriendly appliances. What you need to avoid, however, is going on a shopping spree in the name of your new frugal lifestyle. It is one thing to buy an inspirational book to get you started but it is quite another to bring home half the bookstore. If you want to start living frugally you have to learn how to spend smart.

Another common mistake people make when they decide to adopt a frugal lifestyle is trying to make too many changes too quickly. Take the time to examine your spending and your habits to identify areas where you might be able to cut back a little without completely depriving yourself. Tackle one project at a time, working your way toward a more frugal lifestyle little by little instead of throwing out all of your possessions and then finding that you no longer have the means to get by.

Tips for Simplifying Your Life

Now that you know what NOT to do when getting started with a frugal lifestyle, you may be wondering where to start. Instead of completely turning your life upside down all at once, try these simple tips to work your way toward frugal living:

  • Start spending less on meals – bring your work to lunch a few days a week instead of eating out every day. Brew your own coffee at home and cut back on Starbucks trips to just once or twice a week.
  • Really pay attention to where you spend your money and decide whether or not there is room to cut back. It may help to keep your receipts for a whole week and then take a close look at them.
  • Think carefully about all of your expenses before you pay for them – do you really need a new pair of shoes? Could you find the same item somewhere else at a lower price?
  • Do not be too spontaneous, especially when it comes to spending. Try planning out a week’s worth of meals so you can do all of your grocery shopping at once and decide on a monthly budget for certain categories like eating out and entertainment.
  • Start thinking about ways to make better use of the resources you have. If you have a big backyard, start a garden – if you have a spare freezer, buy food in bulk to save money.

Living a frugal lifestyle may be a simpler way of life but there is nothing simple about it. Learning to live with less is difficult and it is not something you can do overnight. It takes time, work, and dedication to achieve a frugal lifestyle but if you are willing to do the work you will find that it is well worth it.
