How to Turn Your Favorite Photos into Wall Art

Nothing brings a room together like a beautiful piece of wall art. Unfortunately, wall art can be incredibly expensive – especially if you want something large enough to make a statement. If you want to decorate your home or apartment with wall art without spending a small fortune, consider turning some of your favorite photos into pieces of art. The process is easier than you might think!

Step-by-Step Guide for Photo Wall Art

There are many ways to go about turning photographs into wall art – there are even companies online that will do the work for you! If you want to save some money, however, you may be better off completing the project yourself. Below you will find step-by-step instructions for turning photographs into canvas wall art:

  1. Gather your materials. You will need a prefabricated canvas, your photo printed to the size of the canvas, some Modge Podge, foam brushes, and some acrylic paint.
  2. Start by painting the outside edges of the prefabricated canvas using the acrylic paint – you also have the option to leave it white. If you prefer, you can paint the edges to match the color of your wall or you can paint it in a contrasting color.
  3. Paint around the border of the canvas in the same color, just in case the photo doesn’t reach all the way to the edges.
  4. Cover the entire front of the canvas with a thick layer of Modge Podge – make sure to cover the whole thing. You may also want to paint the edges to give them a bit of shine.
  5. Place the printed photo on the canvas, making sure to center it, and press it firmly around the edges to remove any air bubbles.
  6. Use the foam brush to apply a thin layer of Modge Podge over the surface of the photo – try to use long, even strokes to avoid smearing the ink on the photo and to remove any small air bubbles from under the surface.
  7. Let the Modge Podge dry completely – this could take a few hours. The finish will depend on the type of Modge Podge you use – it comes with either a matte or a gloss finish.
  8. Hang your new wall art wherever you want it!

As you can see, this project is very easy to complete and it leaves plenty of room for customization. Prefabricated canvases come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so don’t be afraid to get creative! Rather than attaching a single photo to each canvas, consider making a collage of multiple photos on a larger canvas.

You could also print one photo very large then cut it into four equal pieces and mount each quarter on a separate canvas then hang them all together to complete the image. The only limitations for this project are the limits of your imagination!

By following the steps provided above you can turn your most beloved photographs into unique pieces of wall art. The beauty of this project is that you can make your wall art as large or as small as you want to. As long as you have the right supplies, anything goes!
