10 Great, Inexpensive Family Night Ideas

There’s nothing quite as fun as planning a night out on the town with your family. The only problem is that so many activities can be super-expensive for a large group, even with child pricing. Don’t worry, though: There are some off-the-beaten-path ideas that serve up the excitement you seek without breaking the bank.

Here are 10 ideas of activities for your next family night that are equal parts entertaining and budget-friendly.

1. Backyard Camping

Taking the entire family on a camping trip is not only time-consuming, but it can also be costly, between gas, campsite fees and supplies you need to make little ones comfortable in the great outdoors. All your kids’ favorite things about camping are easy to replicate in your backyard: You can eat a picnic dinner, make s’mores and look at the stars. You can sleep outside, too, if you have a tent and it’s going to be a warm night.

2. Game Night

One night, bring your family together for an old-fashioned board game competition with today’s most exciting family board games. You might have to invest in a tabletop game or two, but it’s worth it for the many nights of fun you’ll get out of them.

3. Make Your Own Movie Theater

It’s no secret the movie theater is an expensive outing, so keep the family at home, pop your own popcorn and pick up some bags of reasonably priced candy to create your at-home theater. If movie night becomes a weekly tradition, you can rotate who in the family gets to choose the movie, too.

4. Go-Karting and Mini Golf

Obviously, every kid will love the chance to hop behind the wheel of a go-kart or putt-putt their way to victory — but these types of outings aren’t always the cheapest. Keeping an eye out for discounts, which many of these places offer regularly, can make it a budget-friendly and unforgettable night out for your family.

5. Family Volunteering

You and your little ones will get so much out of volunteering together. There are so many activities to choose from — many of which your kiddos will find genuinely fun — so be sure to research kid-friendly volunteering opportunities before you sign up for one.

6. Outdoor Game Night

On a nice, warm evening, you and your kids can play the classic outdoor games you used to play as a kid. Try everything from tee ball, hide-and-go-seek and Mother May I?, to capture the flag, kickball and badminton.

7. Fancy Dinner Party

You don’t have to serve them a five-course meal, but you can invite your kids to a fancy, dress-up dinner in the dining room. They’ll love the opportunity to wear costumes or even extra-special outfits they’ve worn for weddings, holidays, etc.

8. Crafting

Your kids love to create, and will love it even more with a fun family project. Not only will they enjoy making an easy DIY project for children, you might also come out with a keepsake to hold onto when they’re a little too old for crafting with Mom and Dad on the weekends.

9. Baking

Your kids already love dessert, so why not let them help you out in the kitchen one night? There are plenty of kid-friendly baking recipes for you to follow, and the sweet results will leave every family member smiling.

10. Gardening

Kids inherently love to get their hands dirty, so spend an evening planting seeds and flowers outside your house. They might even love helping you water and care for their plantings after the fact.

How will you spend your next family night? No matter what you decide to do, one thing is for sure: You’re building memories your kids will carry with them for the rest of their lives, and nothing’s better than that.
