Save Money with These Summer Landscaping Tips

Nothing says summer like a bright green lawn, blooming beds full of flowers, and attractive shrubs and hedges. Unfortunately, keeping your landscaping looking lush is not as simple as it seems, and it can be expensive as well. If you want your property to look its best this summer without breaking the bank, follow these money-saving summer landscaping tips.

1. Choose Your Plants Wisely

It doesn’t have to be expensive or terribly time-consuming to keep your lawn looking nice and your beds fully planted. The key is to find out which plants are native to your area or successful in your climate so they stand the best chance of doing well. This works not only for the shrubs and flowers you plant in your beds but also for the type of grass you choose for your lawn.

2. Be Generous with Mulch

One of the biggest expenses for keeping your landscaping looking great all summer long is watering. If you’re lucky, you’ll get enough rain that you won’t have to water every day, but you may still need to do it from time to time. To ensure that your plants soak up as much water as they can and to minimize loss from evaporation, be generous with mulch in your beds. If you really want to save, contact the city to see if they give away the mulched remains from fallen trees or use dried leaves instead.

3. Grow Your Own Food

What better way to make your landscaping work for you than to grow your own food. You don’t have to get too elaborate but growing some of the herbs and vegetables you use most often can save you a lot of money. You might even be able to take the pits, seeds, and ends of certain foods and re-sprout them in the kitchen before planting them in your garden.

4. Make Use of Solar Lighting

Adding a few spotlights or some path lighting can transform the look of your landscaping overnight – literally. If you want to save some money on your electric bill and minimize the hassle of installation, go with solar lighting instead of wired lighting. You can find individual solar lights or buy packs of them at your local home and garden supply store. Just make sure you set them in the sun to charge for at least 12 hours before installing them.

5. Make it Practical

If you can make improvements to your landscaping that also serve a practical purpose, all the better! For example, if you’re thinking about planting a few new trees, consider planting them in an area where they will naturally shade your house as they grow – you can also plant evergreens to make a natural privacy wall. If you’re making updates to your garden, look for companion plants that will help the plants you already have to grow better. It’s also a good idea to work with the natural lay of your land than to try to change it too significantly.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make your landscaping look great and there are many simple things you can do to use your property to save money. So, if you’re looking to make your property look its best without breaking the bank, try some of the tips above!
