Over the decades, humans have become increasingly more aware of our impact on the world we live in. The Earth is our home and the only one we have, so it pays to treat it well. Though you may not have the power to incite global change, there are simple things you and your family can do to be just a little bit more eco-conscious.

One of the best things you can do to reduce your family’s waste is to learn the basics of recycling. Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the details of recycling and learn the local rules for dividing and collecting recyclables. If your area doesn’t collect recycling with the trash, do some research to find a drop off center where you can take the recyclables yourself. You might be surprised how much of what you’ve been throwing away is actually recyclable.

Here are some other ways to reduce your family’s waste to do your part:

  1. Stop using plastic bags in favor of reusable shopping bags, washable sandwich bags, and alternative storage containers.
  2. Plan your meals ahead of time to cut down on food waste from uneaten leftovers – try to use the leftovers of some meals as ingredients in others.
  3. Start composting your organic waste instead of throwing it away and use the compost in your garden to grow your own food.
  4. Learn how to make simple repairs to things like clothes and shoes instead of throwing them out and replacing them when they break.
  5. Cancel your subscriptions and magazines that you no longer read – it may take some time to get through it all, but your mailbox will be less cluttered for it and you won’t be wasting paper.
  6. Use regular dishes instead of disposable plates – it may take time to wash them, but paper plates and plastic utensils account for a significant amount of family waste.
  7. Stop buying plastic water bottles and use reusable water bottles instead – you can even buy reusable straws to bring with you when you eat out.
  8. Start shopping in bulk at stores where you can bring your own containers – use jars, reusable bags, and other containers you already have instead of using new ones.
  9. Make your own condiments and staples at home instead of buying them from the store – you can make everything from yogurt to salad dressing.
  10. Turn your old clothes into rags for cleaning instead of buying wet wipes or paper towels.
  11. Don’t throw anything away that could be used by someone else – this goes for clothes, shoes, furniture, and everything that doesn’t actually go bad.
  12. Use cloth diapers if you have a baby instead of buying disposable diapers – it may not sound pleasant, but once you get used to it, it’s no big deal.
