I've never canned either, but I HAVE made apple butter from the instructions here on FV in the crock pot. It's easy! You core, peel some apples, cut into chunks, put into the crockpot and cook until it's a sweet brown goo. DH loves apple butter and it's expensive so making my own has been a real money saver!

Look for apple butter recipes, and Sara did an article on fruit butters, try there if you can't find it in the cookbook!

    Don't forget about applesauce, either.
Very easy to make. Dehydrated apples would probably be easy to do too.

Here is a link to give you safe, tested recipes, found at the National Center for Home Food Preservation:

    http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/publication...gGuide2_06.pdf

A Ball Blue Book is also a go-to resource. These books are found where canning items are sold.

And yet one more web site: http://www.homecanning.com/

I dehydrate seemingly "tons" of apples, and that's my preferred method of preservation. Easy to do, easy to store, easy to use... After they are dehydrated, apples make a great out-of-hand snack, made into apple pie, cobbler, applesauce, added to baked goods, added to homemade granola.....

I make large quantities of apple bread and sauce and freeze it. Our tree is doing great this year.
