Frugal Car Suggestions?

Hi everyone!

Big news today -- DH and I decided it was time and we're buying ourselves a car tonight! We picked out a beautiful little 2001 navy blue Chevy Cavalier. We're really excited about it!

So, am curious -- does anyone have any frugal car tips? Anything we can do to save on gas and maintenance, etc? Any tips would be fantastic!

I don't have tips, but I just wanted to say, my dson has a Chevy Cavalier and it's a great car. Congrats!

Well, I'm not sure if this is what you wanted to know or not. I've been getting 25 mpg in my Toyota Camry. Recently I got a tune up (long long overdue) and have also started using the gasoline with 10% ethanol added because it is the cheapest at the station I frequent. The mpg I'm getting has increased to 30! Now I do not know if the better mileage is due more to the tuneup or the ethanol gasoline -- but its great news for us.

I just have the common sense things to pass on Rawiya. Be sure to have your oil changed every 3000-5000 miles depending on the recommendations of the owner's manual, keep your tires properly inflated and check on that often for optimum wear and gas mileage. We have very good luck with our older vehicles by making sure the oil is changed and having the transmission fluids checked and topped of when needed. I love having dependable vehicles so I'm not at all opposed to regular maintenance.

Jean, we have a Toyota Camry,too. I'll have to try the tips you mentioned.

Tire inflation is very important. We bought our newHonda Civic last Oct. and had been driving on the tires with the air pressure they came with. About a month ago dh husband checked the air and inflated them to where they should be and we added another 8 miles to the gallon

I agree with all the above. I am a firm believer in having your oil changed on schedule and having it done at a place you trust (or do it yourself).

I have started to get 30-50% better mileage out of my 17 yr old Honda Accord since I started riding my bike to work a lot of the time.........teeheehee!!!!!!!!!
