My Journey on the Frugal Side of life

This is a personal challenge to put into action what I have learned about being frugal and to live a more purposeful life.
I have always loved to journal, this is a place I can put down my thoughts and keep myself working toward my goals and more in control of my spending. Maybe others will be inspired in some way as well.

  1. Where does the money go?

I continue to look closer at the bills we pay to be a more informed consumer.

DH called around for quotes on home insurance and decided on one that saves us $55 this year. It is with a company we had auto insurance with in past and had good luck with. We can save another $12 if we pay it annually instead of quarterly.
Also had DH get print out of all his filled prescriptions from his pharmacy so far this year. I was curious how much his insurance is covering of ...
  2. Change of plans

My visiting host son had made out with friends to take him to airport today. The airport is an 240 mile round trip from our town. I was kind of happy about this, to save some money on gas. Well, they backed out on him, (they probably realized how much it would cost them as well and maybe he didn't offer to pay). So DH and I took him as soon as I got off work. We also bought him some food to eat when we got near the airport as he has a 7 hour trip ahead of him. As I gave him a hug goodbye he did ...
  3. Back to reality

Back to work tomorrow after a 6 day stretch of paid time off hours. I am ready to get back to a scheduled life. The more free time I have the less I seem to accomplish. I need structure in my life. Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for the extra time I have had with my family and to relax. The weather has been wonderful as well.
Todays auto withdrawal from checking was an energy bill. It was $72.00 higher than my normal budget pay amount! Say what?? Spent time on We energies website ...
  4. Frugal outing

by , 08-05-2013 at 07:33 PM (My Journey on the Frugal Side of life)
DS and host son were looking for something to do this afternoon. In the past I would have suggested something that would cost money such as a movie or bowling. Today I asked if they would like to go on free walk in the woods with our dog. We packed up and since I didn't know exactly where to go for walking trails we started down a road outside of town that is in a county forest. I had son log into GPS and look for the closest park. We had an adventurous drive down one lane fire lanes that went on ...
  5. A closer look

by , 08-05-2013 at 01:45 PM (My Journey on the Frugal Side of life)
As the bills come due this month I will be taking a closer look at them. Today was a motherload of auto withdrawals from the checking account. Wireless phone bill (4 of us on the plan), both kids student loan payments, groceries from Saturday, CFCA (charity). Without going into specific amounts the total was $713.86.
DS will be paying me $204.32 when he gets paid the 15th. We discussed his $20 dollar overage of data use. DD will pay us $130.00 on the 16th when she gets paid. The groceries ...
