My business stumbles forward....

Totally unexpected development on the business front today. I have seen a little craft store on my way to/from work every day for almost a year now. I have never stopped in. Today, I wasn't in a hurry, and I thought, hey, what the heck. I'll give it a once-over. I am not typically the kind who stops at craft stores (although I'll slam on the brakes and cause a nine-car pile-up at the whiff of a bead or yarn store), so I'm still not really sure what got into my head. Anyhoo, I stopped in.

The woman was very pleasant, and as I wandered around, we made small talk, and she mentioned that her husband was expanding the store to take advantage of a large storage room in the back. They are building crafters' booths, and are leasing them out. She was obviously very proud of it, and she took me on a tour.

Well, very long story short, I ended up signing a three-month lease for one of the booths after grilling her for about half an hour!! Not sure what the HELL I was thinking, as I don't have nearly enough inventory to fill it, but I am nevertheless really excited about it. After work, I stopped at the library and spent about 90 minutes researching how to sell crafts to their best advantage and trying to figure out how I want to design my lay-out.

I left the library thinking about the milestones I've passed in my life. When I was 20, I started my career; when I was 30, I bought my first house; at 40, I started my business. I wondered if this booth was a huge mistake or a step in the right direction. I drove down the dark highway toward my home, and thought about where I'd be when I was 50, and what milestone I could claim then, if any. Just before my turn-off, I saw a shooting star. I'm not a superstitious person, but I'll admit, I wished upon it. And thought about how long it has been since I actually seen a shooting star, and hoped it was a harbinger of good fortune to come.

Fluff and Feathers

Madhen, I used to rent 5 spaces at an antique malls and they collected the tax and paid it, but 75 sounds very reasonable. If you had your own place you would pay alot more than that for utilities. Keep good inventory and you might have to invest in a locked case. Sometimes the merchandise is stolen, especially for small items.Sometimes the shops sell used ones from people who are no longer using them or bought a larger or better case. So keep track of what you bring in.Good luck sounds like a lot of fun.

How exciting! I've never done the craft "mall" thing, simply becuase we dont' have a good one around here or I would do it! I do the craft shows, which are fun, but lugging things back and forth is a pain! So just think, you will only have to lug things in once and hopefully, everyone else will lug them out of the store for you!

I wish you much success on this endeavor! Keep us posted on how it goes!

    Wow, how cool.

Do you know what you'll be selling? Will you focus on one of your crafts (eg beading), or will you sell a variety?

    When do you start selling?

    Thanks for all the encouragement!

Michelle, I will be selling mostly my beaded jewelry, but also some knitted projects and plastic canvas. I told the woman that it was mostly jewelry, but that if it was needlework, it was fair game. Sounds like the others who have committed to a booth are much more specific. One woman does beaded purses. One does quilts. One does flower arrangements, etc. I am hoping that I will have enough variety, including some small-ticket items, to at least make back the cost of the booth each month.

My lease starts 2/1/2009, so I can set up as early as 1/31/2009 and start selling on Monday. (The store is closed on Sunday right now, but she is thinking about expanding to Sunday hours in the summer.)
