Day One - Preparing The Garden Bed

We decided that we wanted to do two garden beds: one would be on the side of the house, the other would be in the front of the house. Perfect! Mother's Day comes and DH buys me a bunch of lovely things to get started. <3 DH!

We get home from our day out yesterday and I start digging. First, I measured the length of the front bed. I left about three feet on each end, then measured two feet segments with a ruler and used the old border as placemarkers. I started to dig a trench to where the new border would go, then tried to measure it...

and that's where we ran into problem #1.

Problem #1 entails the fact that the new border is too wide for the plot we wanted. We bought this wire border that measures 18 inches high by eight feet long. The eight feet long part is divided into six segments, which means that each segment is about sixteen inches long. This equals out to the garden having to be at least 32 inches wide for two of the six segments to fit.

In other words, I have to bring out the garden about another 8 inches. I'm not worried about it, but that's just more backbreaking work to get the garden situated without having to spend more money on it. I have enough border (bought four of these 18 inch x 8 feet packages) to do both the side and the front yard. The problem is that I don't think I have enough flower seeds and tomato plants to do the front if I want two tomato plants on the side and then two in the backyard.

These are the starter pictures so far. Once I dig out the rest of the grass and put in the border, I'll post more lovely pictures. I'm so excited!
