Our gardening journey is just beginning...

We decided we wanted a garden this year. Now that I have a water bath canner, I can do some canning and not let the produce go to waste.

Our first dilemma was trying to figure out what we wanted. I definitely wanted tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Alright then...

Next, we wanted them in a place that would be great for both sun exposure and space. I thought that the front yard would do well, but with the large pine tree in the middle of the yard it wouldn't get enough sunlight to justify having sunloving plants. Then we thought of using the side yard. What a great idea! It faces East and gets a lot of sun. Perfect!

Then we had an issue with some skunks. Now the skunks are gone, but where did they go? DH thinks that the Great Horned Owl may have made a snack out of them, so I believe our skunk troubles are gone. Now we can proceed with starting the garden.

I purchased a Garden Claw Gold to help me dig up the garden areas. The front yard will have perennials in the back and some annuals in front of them for a bit of color. The side yard will have my babies: tomatoes, onions, cilantro, parsley, lettuce, etc. These are all things we use during the summer and by having fresh produce that I can be sure of, it'll be nice to have some tasty treats that I can just walk out my door and pick myself. What I need next is some nice garden border to keep the animals out, so I'll be checking out Superstore to see what they have this week. I did peruse their seed selection today and looked at some seed tape, which would help me plant things a whole lot faster. I need to do some research to see which plants tolerate the cooler temperatures and then put them in. I still want carrots, so I'll have to see how much room I'll have to put them in with the lettuce, onions, cilantro, parsley and tomatoes. I might end up doing container gardening for the herbs instead.

We did have plans to do a raised garden bed but I don't think we'll need to do that anymore.

Let's hope I can get this all set up by this weekend.

Sounds like a great spot for the garden! Have fun. There is nothing better than your own homegrown produce.
