Default Lucy ~ 'The Stroke' (poem)

I was looking for one of my poems to send a dear friend tonight and I came across one that I wrote for Lucy (DD) when she was in full time therapy, after her second stroke. I haven't read it since, and it bought back memories........ Just wanted to share it with you.

    Lucy. 'The Stroke'

They said 'It's a cerebral accident',
You heard it, you said 'That's a shame',
but now she's at home it's all over,
and life goes on just the same.

Of course she can't wash her own hair now,
or cut up her food to eat,
    her thinking's considerably slower,
and she often trips over her feet.

She doesn't know why she's tearful,
or why everything seems such a chore,
she's had to learn to write again,
and read, and speak ~ There's more...

Everyday there is a blood test,
her veins are bruised and sore,
    there's medication, therapies,
    tears, frustration, WAR.

She's not looking for your sympathy,
    she suffers silently,
she's never said 'It's so unfair',
or 'Why did it have to be me?'.

All our lives are different now,
I watch her pain and weep,
    nothing now is simple,
    so through our keyhole peep.

Life you see, is NOT the same,
it may look it from the side,
but in the solitude of our home,
there is no place for her to hide.

You cannot change God's will for us,
and your path will have it's tears,
just stop to share a thought, a smile,
    and ease each other's fears.
