Support your adult children because they're unable to handle the reality of life of paying their own bills.

Wow this is a great thread!

DONT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER - Meaning you keep telling yourself NO but do you listen?

ADVICE - YOU ASK, WE ADVISED - Do you listen?

Seek, Listen and Model advice of people who are deeply in debt and have the attitude "a person will always be in debt there is no use trying to get out of debt". I have a coworker who is older and in poor health and is thinking of going deeply and I mean deeply in debt to purchase land in the country and build a house...and she does not even like living out in the country. But her husband who is also older and in poor health has the dream of living out there. Anyway my coworker is listening to people tell her this is the time to do it...seems like NONSENSE to me especially since there are no close medical facilities to where she is thinking of moving and she will be up to her eyeballs and beyond in debt.

Why do they have to spend so much money? Land really that expensive in BFE Texas or are they going to another state or is their dream house ridiculous in scale or?

From what I read now, I agree, it sounds stupid. I am just curious.

I love the advice one so much that I want to add to it..........

Make sure when you ask for advice from friend/family or especially on this website and it is answered, that you say "I can't give up the cell phone, car, satellite, going out to eat, or change anything else. That stuff is too hard and inconvenient and I don't want to do it. So can anyone find another way I can make ends meet?"

Sorry if this comes off too mean, but I just see it all the time.

Well, she explained to me that it is very expensive because:
1.)They have to have a well dug which she told me would be quite expensive as they have to go thru rock??
2.) They have to clear the land and she does not like to do any type of outside yard work so they would need to pay to have it done.
3.) They have to pave a road as the city/county state does not have a maintained road to the place.
4.) They have to buy a tractor to mow the place after they clear it and a barn which can be locked to keep the tractor so no one steals it.
5.) They have to purchase a gas storage tank/building to keep the tractor with gas.
6.) They have to run electricity to the house.
7.) They want a huge house and they want the house built around a courtyard. The courtyard would be in the middle.

The land they bought for a house has no road access? I mean, if it is adjoining a road, you can just put in a gravel driveway.

    But then you say:

They want a huge house and they want the house built around a courtyard. The courtyard would be in the middle.
I guess a gravel driveway wouldn't go with the theme!

I am a bit confused about having to clear large portions of the land. Wouldn't it just be easier to leave the land as is and enjoy it the way it is? I mean, if it is not a fire hazard like scrub or something.

They are talking about living like landed gentry without the servants. It is a little silly.

I fail to see why it is off topic. This thread is about making stupid financial choices, is it not?

True - I just feel like we're getting off the pattern of posting brief, general pointers on how to fail and into details about how some specific couple is failing.

Be a GREAT shopper.......who cares if you will never used those 10 boxes of hamburger helper before they expire, buy them anyway because they are only 50 cents a box after coupon. It doesn't matter how great the deal is or even if it's free, if you buy something you're not going to use or don't need, it's still stupid.
