Question Do you give yourself an "allowance" each week?

I have been wondering about this. We don't, if we "need" something we go and get (for house, repairs etc.) and it isn't very often that I buy things just for me. (not on a weekly basis)

Do you give yourself so much a week and if you don't spend it do you "save" it and keep it for the next week?

We don't either Calico. I think it's a great idea, but we've just never gotten around to this......I'm very interested to hear what everyone else says on the subject, great question!

    Yup, dh's whole check.

Actually we don't have an allowance either.   If there are a few extra $$, we will take it and divide it up once in awhile, but mostly we don't have an allowance.

Nope. The kids don't get an allowance either. We can't really afford it and I believe the kids need to learn to work for and budget their own money.

yes, we have a monthly amount each and a small amount for DD who does more than her share around the house with never so much as a boo about it and we're happy to be able to give her a small allowance. The opportunities for her to earn extra money outside the home are very slim but sometimes she'll look after the neighbor's cat while they're away for extra money. She's a good saver though and she budgets what she does get because she doesn't get any more just for the sake of getting something she wants. We call it life-skills.

Our monthly money goes for everything down to buying our own coffee/ice tea or whatever while we're out. A game of golf for my DH, my craft supplies, a book if I want one, a magazine, or whatever we choose to spend it on. We take the same amount each month (haven't had a raise in years and it's our choice if we spent it or save it.

DS has has a part-time job and summer jobs since he turned 16. While he's in college we are giving him a small amount of money each semester for small extras at school, but he saves enough during the summers to support himself throughout the year.

There were many times throughout the years (we'll be married 27 years next month) that we haven't taken spending money for ourselves. It's not extravagant by any means because we don't live an extravagant lifestyle, and it keeps our goals in mind, but it's nice to have and we're thankful.

Yes we do- we call it "blow money" - money we don't have to account to each other about.

I use mine for yard sales, yarn/craft stuff and lunch with a friend. Dh uses his for eating out when I work, magazines and so on.

I have read a couple of books/sites that stress this. To sum it up...

An allowance will help you not feel deprived and keep you motivated to pay off bills, etc in your plans.

I think I will try it.
