Default What do you pay for titling your car?

Nicole just bought her Grandparents 1984 Taurus off of them & had to go get the title switched into her name. New York so sucks... she had to pay $50.
    Can you believe that?! BooHiss!

Doesn't it depend on what the car was bought for, or am I thinking of something else? I think I'm thinking of a tax that is paid upon registration after buying a car.

It could be worse. When we lived in NC, we had to pay PROPERTY tax on our car...every freaking year...depending on the value. To the tune of $300-$400 That's on top of inspection and registration, etc.

This was just for the title, she's not registering it til she needs it and that will be another fee ($42).
Ya, that NC thing stinks too Heather.

The taxes & fees on top of fees are strangling this state. If it wasn't for family, we wouldn't be in this state after Jack retires.

Oh ya, forgot about the tax. It was a gift so she didn't have to pay the 8%.

In our state it's somewhere between $30-$50 to change the title.

We don't pay property tax on cars, but each town usually charges and Excise Tax - we pay $20 per $1000 of value (not sure how they determine the value, but its a lot less than the Kelley Blue Book). I payed $37.50 last year for my 1997 Sentra.
