I was at an activity where the table decorations were twigs and branches from budding bushes and trees in clear vases. The twigs and branches had puzzle pieces taped to them. (Puzzle made frugally by gluing pictures from a calendar to a cereal box, then cut out.) There was also a page from a book that was being thrown out rolled up in each vase. The pages had been treated by soaking them in coffee or tea then baked at a low temperature in an oven. It gives the pages an artificial mustiness and an "OLD" look to it. A sprig of flowers was also in some of them.
The puzzles were meant to be taken off and put together as a table activity. (This wasn't a wedding, btw.)
It looked very nice. And the added bonus of taking a puzzle home if somebody wanted to at the end.

My brother had a DIY wedding and most of the decorations were just fabric draped nicely over tables, over banisters, over railings. Also used white Christmas lights for a little "ambiance" once the sun went down.
He actually had part of the food "pot luck" and they had hired a small catering company to be in charge of clearing plates, refilling dishes in buffet, clean up etc.
I was one of the biggest doubters of this pot luck wedding and I have said more than once, it was probably the nicest wedding i have ever been too.

Congratulations on your engagement!
I bought large glass vases and square-cut mirrors from the dollar tree for centerpieces. I put a couple $0.60 goldfish in each vase and topped it with colorful gerber daisies. I sat the vase in the middle of the square mirror and placed a few daisies around the bottom. I also bought old (small) colored bottles from the thrift shop and hung them in a small tree near the entrance of the garden. I used tons of tulle for banisters and railing. I made pillows that matched my bridesmaids' dresses for the benches and white lights under the tulle to offer the after hours ambience.

I think you can cut a lots of flower with paper. The most practical decoration is something made with paper.
