Hair-Raising Recipes
Whip up some yummies! A cut above eye-of-newt, these treats satisfy even the harshest party critics.
What are a few bugs in the punch or some worms in the apples? While Beetle Juice and Wormy Apples might disgust most adults, the kids just gobble them up!
For Beetle Juice, you’ll need:
raisins
16-ounce bottle cranberry juice cocktail
12-ounce can lemonade concentrate, thawed
ice cube trays
large pitcher
six clear glasses
What to do:
Several hours before the party, prepare ice cubes by pouring water into ice cube tray and adding three or four raisins to each section to make "beetles."
Freeze until firm.
At serving time, pour cranberry juice cocktail, lemonade concentrate, and four cans of water, into the pitcher. Stir.
Pour Beetle Juice into glasses and serve with one or two beetle ice cubes.
(serves 6)
Variations: Mix the lemonade concentrate with lemon-lime soda for a carbonated, bubbly drink. Add more raisins to the ice cubes to make the drink crawling with beetles.
Practical tip: Serve in clear glasses so the kids can see the Beetle Juice clearly.
For Wormy Apples, you’ll need:
eight red apples
1 cup low-fat, low-sugar peanut butter
1 cup favorite low-sugar jam
eight gummy worms
apple corer
medium bowl
spoon
cupcake tin
large, rectangular pan
eight plates
What to do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Remove the apple cores, being careful to leave the bottom of each apple intact.
Combine peanut butter and jelly in a bowl.
Stuff mixture into center of apples.
Place apples in cupcake tin, set tin in pan half full of water, and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, until apples are tender.
Cool; then place on individual serving plates.
Insert a gummy worm halfway into hole, with the rest hanging over the side, and serve.
(serves 8)
Variation: Spoon melted peanut butter and jelly mixture over the apples as a sauce.
Practical tip: Add gummy worms to anything you serve during your Halloween party for that extra icky touch!
