Default 2018 Pantry / Freezer Challenge

    New Year.
This challenge is to encourage users to use up what is in their pantry, freezer or fridge instead of it "hiding" in the back until it has to be tossed and wasted.

You can post as often as you wish and tell what you used up out of your pantry, freezer and fridge. Me, I also post what I ended up still having to toss. That's up to you,

Had some chicken alfredo sauce the kid had fixed a few days ago. I boiled some fett noodles and now have a huge skillet of chicken alfredo again.

I’m totally in on this one! This is how I plan to keep my grocery budget low this year. I am not sure exactly how I can use up some of what I have on hand, but I know there are a thousand websites to help with that.

Amy, you can always post a list of ingredients here and ask for ideas.
Stop trying to organize all of your family’s crap. If organization worked for you, you’d have rocked it by now. It’s time to ditch stuff and de-crapify your world.

If you're not using the stuff in your home, get rid of it. You're not going to start using it more by shoving it into a closet.

Use it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown

I've started a list of food staples I want to keep in the freezer and pantry, and mixes to make at home. We can't buy as much for convenience foods anymore so that means I have to DIY. Having a list will help me keep track of what I need to make when we run out of something.

I also need to defrost the big freezer and get it more organized. That will include figuring out what more needs to be gotten rid of, and what we can use up in small doses, and what just needs to be used up because it's old.

Our freezers were so full I couldn't fit anymore in it. We have a chest freezer and a small two drawer freezer in the bottom of our fridge. It's mostly meat, and there's too much of it to make a full inventory at the moment.

The last week I've made chili, pork cheek and fennel ragu, meat sauce, meatballs in tomato sauce, and Thai curry. Intended to use pork chops for the curry, but found some chicken breast instead. Gave me 8 boxes of leftovers and room for most of them in the freezer.

Tonight we're using frozen homemade pizza dough, pepperoni, and mozzarella I got when it was $0.16. Usually about $1.

Tomorrow we'll have soup with vegetables, beans, bacon and leftover chicken.

Tonight's dinner is going to be some chicken/orzo dish that is a prepared mix that I found in the pantry when I was cleaning it out.
I also told the kids that I'm not buying more snacks for lunches until they start eating the older snacks (unexpired) that I uncovered in the pantry.

Ideas needed for "salted caramel ham". It was "marked down" weeks ago and I tried it. A little odd-tasting but OK. I'm thinking some Boston baked beans with the ham added. Molasses & brown sugar in the the beans anyway so this should blend in right?

Baked beans do sound good for that. It might work in fried rice, too, where you have salty soy sauce to balance the flavor. Or in a salad with walnuts, apples, or blue cheese where those sharp flavors and some vinegar based dressing will counter the sweetness. I hesitate to say "just cover it in BBQ sauce", but that might work, too. Put some grill marks on it or pan fry it. It might be good for breakfast as well.

Tossed a bag of chips. Sat in the pantry so long the oils went rancid. Sure saved a lot on that sale.

Last night I made quesadillas with two bags of tortillas I found in the bottom drawer of the fridge. They were a little hard, but when they were cooked, they were just fine!

Also, I've been putting snacks I found in the pantry in DS6's lunchbox this week. They aren't expired, but have been in there a long time. No complaints.

I need to start hitting this one hard and use up the freezer and pantry - NO adding to it unless it's leftovers.

    Today I added to freezer:
seven 1# packages of lo ham from Easter
7 hm Sausage, egg english muffins

    Used from freezer:
    2.5# of blueberries
last container of home grown butternut squash

    Pantry:
combined spices and was able to throw away 3 empty containers
    Bag of powder sugar

    Used from Fridge:
last 2 bricks of cream cheese

    wasted:
found a jar of home canned green beans that didn't seal. They were from the garden so no $ lost, just time.

    Need to deal with:
2# of dried cranberries. I will probably freeze them tomorrow.

Need to hit this one too. Too much stuff that's on the "edge" and to much tossed. Lately that I remember...

    Fridge
    Bag taco shells
    Last of pepperoni
    1 red pepper
    2 tomatoes
    last of container cottage cheese

    Freezer
    3 chicken breasts
    1 pizza

    Pantry
    Can corn
    Can soup
Last box Ziploc qt freezer bags... have to get more

    Tossed
The very last few shells in that taco shell bag. They were soggy. Last couple bags I've had have done that and never have before. Don't get it.
2 chicken breasts that were thawed out and forgot about. Not happy over that one
small amount of corn in container not eaten at the meal and forgot about
about half dozen potatoes that had sprouted and got wrinkly. Almost looked moldy
    about half lb of lunchmeat
3 apples that were in a bowl and somehow got hidden in a corner on the counter.

    WAY to much tossed.

    Used:.
    1# ground beef
1 jar of hm spaghetti sauce
    1 can tomato paste
    1 box of spaghetti noodles

    Wasted:
crockpot of ham and beans. I forgot to make it half water and half ham broth. It was way too salty. I added a bunch of water and 2 diced potatoes and it didn't help. The ham and beans soaked up a ton of salt.

    Added:
    nothing
