Default 2019 Pantry / Freezer Challenge

I couldn't find current numbers (2012-2015) but the articles I read stated that American households throw away between $640 to $2,400 worth of food every year. What could you do with an extra $640-2,400? Get current on your bills? Pay off a credit card? Create an Emergency Fund? Go on a weekend getaway?

This challenge is to encourage us to use up what is already in our pantry, freezer or fridge instead of it "hiding" in the back until it has to be tossed and wasted.

You can post as often as you wish and tell what you used up or added to your pantry, freezer and fridge. I also post what I had to throw out and try to attach $$ amounts to my waste.

I can believe those figures. just threw out some old veggies..cabbage, greens, an acorn squash went moldy. all in compost. crows/seagulls got crackers..bread, shrimp appys, cookies, leftover chicken from soup. helps them and uses up old stuff. half a loaf of bread is moldy so tomorrow.

used up shrimp appys, frozen pizza, lunchmeat, dairy, rest of cheese cut up from xmas, hotdogs, buns, pb. rest of bag of hashbrowns, farmers sausage for hash. an onion. taco shells, seasoning and beef.

leftover frozen roast chicken, leftover carrots form veggie tray, frozen celery, rest of a box of dry spaghetti for chicken soup. froze 3 containers of soup after a couple of days of eating it. crackers, candy ...cookies all leftover xmas stuff.

shopped today ..added kd cups for dd, couple boxes of hamburger helper, dairy products, fruit.

Marthamfi - I also can believe it. Food can be expensive and most people don't garden or raise animals for food. One year, before I got remarried, I was living in Idaho and determined to not waste any food, I tracked all of my waste and it was around $200 for the year. I can't do that good now as I'm married, my hubby does most of the cooking and he doesn't stay on top of it like I did. But if something does go bad we feed it to the animals or it goes in the compost.

still using up pkgs of spice mixes I am bound and determined to get down this year. I have used up another 2 or 3 of those mixes so far. I may have to cut them in half as the chili one was a little strong in flavour ( more than I am used to anyway) so it may take a lot longer than I thought it would to use some of them up. I also used up the rest of a dip mix that had been in there a while. DH doesn't eat that so it is up to me to eat it all. ( DH is super picky on lots of things and throw in a severe dairy allergy, not intolerance, makes it quite hard to find things to eat.)
