what to do with special fabric
A little background, my mom passed away 12 years ago when I was 17 and my brother was 14.
After she passed I saved her flannel nightgowns with the intention of doing something with the fabric, a small quilt or something when my brother or I have kids.
My brother's wife is expecting and due in July. I want to do something really special. There are only two nightgowns, so I am thinking just incorporating a part of in on something.
I only sew straight lines but have friends that can do anything.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks!
Megan

Could you make a baby quilt out of something else and back it with the flannel? That would be simple and special. You could probably have enough of the flannel to do possibly 4 baby quilts if the gowns are long.....? How sweet of you to share this. I have some of my mom's things that I've saved as well. With some of the fabric I want to make a purse to carry and have her with me a lot of the time. (I might make a tote instead b/c I love purses and switch fairly often)

What a wonderful and kind idea. I like the idea of using it in a quilt, front or as the backing. If the cuffs or neckline are fancy you could use them to embellish the front of a pillow or quilt.
Depending on the age/condition of the flannel, you might want to ask your friends if it needs to be stabilized with a lightweight interface. It would help prevent it from tearing under the stress of sewing or using as a quilt.
I'm sure your Brother and his wife will love the idea.

here's what I did...and had enough leftover to make four pillows. (she had four sons and left behind a hubby when she died, so it worked out well)
you could do somehting like this, but baby quilt sized...

Thank you so much for the ideas! I called my mom's friend over the weekend. She's a master quilter who wins awards and has been featured in quilting magazines. I just asked her for ideas, I thought she would be too busy to help. but she said if I wanted her to, she would be honored to help. I'll post a picture when we are finished.
