Default My Use Less Dishes Challenge

Sometimes at my predinner wash up i look at a sink FULL of dishes and wonder how myself and a toddler managed to use 5 glasses and 4 plates from 9-5??

So I am challenging myself to use one placesetting a day. 1 plate, 1 glass, 1 mug, 1 bowl.... that's it

    clearly prep dishes don't count

I wish you luck! I've been trying to "challange" my family to this for years!

They are pretty good about cups and glasses, but we always just have a ton of dishes used in a day. I didn't mind so much when we had a dishwasher, becuase I ran one load a day and did pots and pans that didn't fit, every other day or so. But now, that I do them by hand...it's a big pain in the butt!

When we were growing up (5 kids), we EACH had a specific glass/cup to use. It was our responsibility to keep up with it, rinse it out after using, etc. They were washed every evening or when necessary during the day.

I have been trying to drink more water. So I keep a cup (8 oz.) on the kitchen counter and fill it and drink it every time I go in the kitchen. Every night it goes in the dishwasher.

Teaching this to hubby WAS hard. He would go through 6 or more glasses a day! He still uses 2 or 3 a day, but he has improved.

My pet peeve is dishes/glasses put in the sink with leftover food and WITHOUT rinsing! You know the ones. Covered in hard crusted over food, dried milk in the bottom of the glass, etc. We were taught to scrap plates into the trash and ESPECIALLY rinse milk glasses. At MIL's house, everybody just puts all their dishes/glasses in the sink - FOOD and all.

Another idea: use less stuff when making food. I use the smallest size measuring spoon for example that I can. If a recipe calls for 3 1/2 tsp then I measure all of it with the 1/2 tesp measure. Also measure out dry ingredients before wet ones so you can use the same measures for both. (Measuring oils before liquid sugars makes it easy to get all the liquid sugars from a measure.) If you have to use multiple bowls, etc. see if you can't use them for more than just 1 step of a recipe or use the measuring cup that you've already gotten dirty instead.

This is a great thread. Even tho I live alone it boggles me how many dishes I use. I'm going to try cutting back.

My DH is the best cook - and uses more pots and pans than I could ever imagine!! - eally cannot complain.

I try to keep up with the dishes, but if I don't more often than not there is a mess in the kitchen when I get up in the AM. Just one of the trade offs in marriage since he really has more to complain about me than I do him LOL

I love to cook but hate the dishes that go along with it. Even if the recipe tells me to use two bowls I have been known to make a well in the dry ingredients and put the wet in the middle.

My husband can get more dishes/pots/pans dirty when he decides to cook. I cannot imagine HOW he manages to use so many items!
