I got about seven skeins of single crochet into it, then gave it up as a bad job. You saw a bit of it resurrected in the cowl-neck cabled sweater.

Oh no!!! You ripped out seven skeins!! That is just depressing. The sweater is gorgeous though.

I'm just ripping it out skein by skein. Actually, it isn't working for the sweater (too thick), so I am beginning to suspect the yarn is cursed.

Cursed yarn seems to happen alot around here as well so I sympathize.

It is evil, I tell you. I hear it chuckling in the dark.

Well, it might just be the voices in my head I hear chuckling. I get them confused with the yarn sometimes.

<chuckle> You gals. I must admit I have not been posting to this thread because I have done absolutely nothing for Christmas this year. Nada. It seems every time I sit down to make something, someone needs it right now. So I give it to them right away.

I also know we're hoping to be away for Christmas this year. So gifts will definitely be tight. I'm thinking I will wait and give people gifts of food. I would like to can some produce, maybe make some pickles, etc. and give those to people. Most of the people I know would really appreciate gifts of food.

Hi all! I'd like to join this merry band of misfits.

The first thing I did to make Christmas more frugal and easier all around was to reduce my gift list. Over the years we've convinced most of our friends and family to just agree to wish each other Merry Christmas and not bother with gifts. Makes life soooo much easier. No kids involved - these are all adults who have reached a stage in life like me where they want to declutter, not add more stuff.

I do give some of them gift baskets of homemade items like quick breads with homemade jams.

I am very fortunate in that I have a friend (since junior high!) who started a few years ago having a Christmas Cookie Baking Marathon with me. We get together for a full LONG Saturday in December and bake up a storm!!! Usually we make a good dozen kinds of cookies (I borrow a neighbor's KitchenAid to use along with mine to make it easier). I give these to neighbors and friends. Here's a platter from 2010's marathon:

Then about a year ago, my friend and I started getting together once a month, taking turns at each other's house to work on different things. One month it might be cleaning out a basement. Another month it would be canning apple butter and jams. Some months we go do something fun like attend a garden seminar or go to a flea market.

This year we want to expand our canning and incorporate some of it into gift baskets at Christmas. Our plan:

    May: Chive Blossom Vinegar
    June: Strawberry/rhubarb (jams)
July: Peach (peach butter, peach cobbler/pie filling, peach bbq sauce, peach jam)
August: Pickle (various pickled veggies); herbal vinegars (basil/garlic/black pepper red wine vinegar; tarragon vinegar; and other mixed herbal vinegars)
September: Tomato/pepper (spaghetti sauce, salsa, pepper jelly)
October: Apple/cranberry (apple butter, cranberry apple jam, cranberry jelly, apple pie filling, etc.)
November: Quick breads (which we then freeze in mini foil pans) and "in a jar" gifts (bean soup mixes, cookie mixes, etc.)
    December: Cookie baking marathon

Most of these I will be doing regardless of whether my friend is able to make it or not. It's a personal goal of mine to try to can something at least 10 out of 12 months.
