Default Get It and Keep it Current Chore Challenge 2011

I'm going to put this up for myself,as last year. Things fell apart fairly quickly for me, but having the challenge here did help keep me at it for a bit. Likewise with the "fling things" goal.

Because I have SOoooo much stuff, I'll figure that the fling things is a part of this. I felt really squirmy about "highjacking" the fling things goal in 2010, despite the fact that folks said they liked reading my posts.

So, here's what I'll do, the "daily" stuff:

Mon: fling things, clean up paperwork/offices
Tues: fling things, clean up pantry/food storage
Weds: fling things, (dump, if needed) firewood/outdoor cleanup
Thurs: fling things, clean up clothes/clothes closets
Fri: fling things, clean fridge or oven(s)/kitchen storage
Sat: fling things (dump, if needed)
Sun: fling things (dump, if needed)

I will commit to flinging 8044 things in 2011.

I left the weekends free, as DH and I tend to be running errands, grocery shopping, etc. then.

I typed out a list of things I had to do daily, Judi, on an Excel spreadsheet, and kept it on my counter. I set it up so I could check off each thing every day for a month, because some of the things were daily, some weekly, etc. It worked really well to keep me on track. I stopped using it only because I ended up traveling for work, and that always screws up my routines, regardless of how good they are!!

As a matter of fact, your thread has inspired me to go back and do that spreadsheet again! Thanks!

This sounds like a really good idea....I think it would help me to have a checklist like this.

Well, I'm glad this has helped someone! I started the year off right, I certainly got rid of things today, and I didn't have any other "chores" to do...

But in making dinner, I got a new batch of potatoes out of the pantry and everything in the basket was growing sprouts, so I rubbed 'em off. This is one of the regular pantry chores I'm scheduled to do on Tuesdays, but I'll acccept that I've done it, anytime!

Also, I do have one chore to add for the weekends, that is clean/put away the linen....

The sheets get washed (whenever) once a week, but never at a regular interval, and I'd like to change that.

I have a reminder in my gmail account that pings on me to wash dishtowels/napkins/placemats (I call this dry linen, it doesn't normally get soaking wet in use and I have one enamel bucket it goes in when its dirty.) I get another email to remind me to wash sponges and rags (wet linen, it has another enamel bucket).

Then the stuff needs to be put away.

I've just done the dry linens, I need to put everything away tidily, it's there, but in a heap at the moment.

The wet linens need to be done, I'm almost out of sponges! And, the bed linens haven't been done this week. As it's 8:26 p.m. here now, that's going to be deferred to tomorrow. But I can start the load of wet linen tonight before I go to bed!

Email that pings and spreadsheets?! Wow you ladies are awesome! Those are great ideas. I am usually just scattered. Things get done but scattered. Need to work on that this year.

Debbie, in my gmail account, I added the chores to my calendar. One of the options for a calendar item is that it repeats/or not, how often and to send you a reminder (how much ahead)/or not.

Gmail also has a "tasks" feature that I use sometimes for one-time chores, but to add the routine chores to it, I have to type each one by hand, much easier to just use the calendar!!!

I have tried using an Excell spreadsheet, but mostly that just makes me mad at Microsoft all over again, adding to my stress, and the idea is to make things LESS stressful!

I have coupons, recipes, etc. in Filemaker databases too.

    IHTH!

I made a notepad doc that I put on my computer's desktop of all the weekly chores and when they're supposed to be done. I think that I need to worry less about WHEN they get done and more about just getting these done at all!

I started the list on Saturday, since that was 1/1, but I'm sure I'll alter it at some point in the future.

I've marked with an X those things that I've done.

    SAT
    Linens
    dry linen X
    wet linen
    sheets
    put away linens
    fling X

    SUN
    Linens
    dry linen
    wet linen X
    sheets X
    Put away linens

    fling X

    MON
    clean offices/paperwork
vacuum DH's office xpartly done, needs doing again, WELL
    file paperwork
    tax paperwork

    fling

    TUES
    pantry/food storage
    spice cabinet X
    potato basket (pantry) X
    potato basket (kitchen)
    onion basket (pantry)
    onion basket (kitchen)
    straighten pantry
    straighten stockpile
    cull?

    fling

    WEDS (dump, if needed)
    firewood/outdoor cleanup
    pickup stray sticks
    stack firewood
    clean up pile
    junk wood to dump

    fling

    THURS

    clothes/clothes closets
    laundry
    put cleaned clothes away
mending, if you ever get that organized!
cull seasonally inappropriate or other as needed

    fling

    FRI
    clean fridge or oven(s)/kitchen storage
    glass shelv(s) in dishwasher
    wipe down oven w/ammonia water
    clean grates
remove everything from one cabinet/shelf; cull and clean X spice cabinet

27 different chores...3-4 a day...you'd think this would be easy!

I'm going to make an honest effort to follow FlyLady's plan this year. She does a zone a week and of course the constant decluttering and weekly items. Just need to actually USE my control journal that I set up a few months ago!

I was off between Christmas and New Year's so I got the house pretty current then. I did a declutter of all dressers and closets. Chores were caught up.

I started back at the paid gig this past Monday and it's gone pretty well. My goal is to have the laundry put away every night, because having it sit in baskets in the master bedroom just does nothing for the ambiance, you know? We have some sort of commitment every night this week, so it didn't happen last night. It will happen tonight though!

I've done okay, but not great this week. There are three reason:
I've been running all over the countryside; when I fell or something, I wrenched my back ... for the past 3 days the pain has kept me from trying to do anything heavy...and DH who is usually gone part of Monday (when I clean his office) was home this week!

    potato basket (pantry, hanging)
    potato basket (pantry, overflow) x
    potato basket (kitchen)X
    onion basket (pantry, hanging)
    onion basket (pantry, overflow) x
    onion basket (kitchen) X

straighten other food storage, if any

I love the New Year bringing us fresh starts everywhere we want!! Judi this is a great thread!!

There are a few things that I want done everyday and then other things done weekly.

    Daily:
    Couch cleared off
    Dishes done and put away
    Bed made
Clothes picked out the night before
    Lunch packed the night before
    Master bath vanity cleared off

    Weekly:
    Change bed linens
    Laundry
    All laundry put away
    Weekly menu plan
    Weekly wardrobe plan
    Bills paid

I am keeping it simple on purpose - I can always add more later!!

I'm still working on using my control journal but at least things are getting done here & there!

The major thing I've got to keep up on is paper clutter. It can totally make a house look trashy/cluttered/dirty.

The holidays and associated visit from DD are over and I now can get back to a 'normal' life!! I am pleased that I've been able to keep up with some things on my list.

Right now I need to strip our bed and wash the linens.
