See thats one thing I never understood, I know the point of the China Set collection of when you get married is to start your 'together' life with 'new to both of you' stuff but I just couldn't fathom trying to collect an entire set/service for 4 or 8 especially since dad and I are clutzs and would end up breaking each piece sooner then we'd be able to use it. And now you have both just confirmed...it gets lugged around and *maybe* used once a year if even. (Though I do like the historical aspect of it - hand me downs, but everything is so disposable now days )

We're not ones to 'display' the dishes but rather use them...right now we have a cheapie Ikea set on the go - from DSIS from over 15 yrs ago AND should those start dying off - DH has his own set of Ikea dishes...those suckers may be cheap but they sure are durable! (mmm k, but not like Corelle LOL)

I have two plastic plates that serve for most days. If I have company over, I break out the Franciscan Desert Rose pattern. It was a wedding present that HE wanted and *I* ended up with, somehow. I'm not wild about it, but I have a 4-serving set with all the serving pieces, so it works when necessary. (For Christmas dinner, I use dinnerware that I bought at Pier One about ten years ago. It is my special holiday stuff. )

Ok - just ran through the house on a mini fling session to see how much I could get rid of before its time to go p/u DH.

14 packets onion soup mix - VERY expired
16 envelopes of hot chocolate mix - VERY expired
2 chicken noodle cup of soup packets - VERY expired
    leftover clump of brown sugar
    4 gnarly old tupperwares w/lids
45 flyer adverts (ie 3 mini piles) That stuff DOES add up quick!
    box of expired calcium chews
    magnet
33 packets of pitcher sized drink mixes - VERY expired
23 boxes of expired gelatin - VERY expired
3 boxes of drink mix sticks - VERY expired
40 commercial pitcher sized packets of drink mix - VERY expired
3 holey plastic bags that aren't useful anymore

    ------
186 items flung today alone - all done while in a whirlwind. Crap sure adds up fast!

    Total flung so far: 316

~I was never into the wedding china stuff either. That was all DH's idea. He has champagne taste. I picked out white dishes and he picked out Sasaki dishes. I liked them so we went with it. They were heavily used until we broke enough that we didn't have 4 settings anymore. But DH wouldn't let me get rid of them and I wasn't about to spend $80 a setting to get more.

We have Corelle. I love that stuff! They look great, take up 1/3 of the space of regular dishes and are super durable. Here are the dishes we actually use and that I love:

Inheriting dishes as a memento is really only cool if you have actual memories of that item being used in connection with the person you got it from. My DH has no memories of his grandmother's china. She gave it to use to be nice and to use, not as a keepsake. It just happens that I can't tolerate florals so they weren't used.
    This is her set:

~That sounds familiar. We are just too nice to the guys when we set up housekeeping I think. I mean, if they were doing the majority of the cooking then maybe they would be the best person to choose how to properly display their creations but that's not usually the case.~

nuisance - I kinda like that floral grandma set. Its nicely subtle. I like your other set too.

My DH was the same - he liked a lot more things then I did when it came to wedding planning and it was me reeling him in. We didn't need half the stuff he was going on about

While going through the housewares store, I saw this set and fell in love with the pattern. But then the old me kicked in...don't need it, no room to store it and we'd never be able to keep an entire set alive long enough to be able to enjoy it b/c some of us are clutz's under this roof But I think its still pretty and bright and cheery.

Oh, purged today in a fit of sudden need to organize and sort the make up in the bathroom - out went:

1 mascara - its older then 6 months
1 eye liner - it wouldn't keep sharp, the lead kept breaking
2 dried out lip balm sticks

Adding 4 more items - not bad for 5 minutes

    Total Flung To Date: 320

ETA - forgot to include 16 packets of expired noodles/rice side dish packets that were given to me, those went out in the huge kitchen purge.

New Total: 336 Flung To Date

~I love that set Libby! It's sweet and natural without being "country". The bird silhouette is such a unique thing china.~

16 individual sheets of address labels from different entities
    8 pair of broken sunglasses
1 rubber dohickey (have no idea what it was)

total so far today: 25 more pieces of junk out the door

Flung some more items yesterday in a fridge purging session so I could make more room for new food going in.

    * jar of red pepper jelly (basically empty)
    * shrimp cocktail sauce - bought who knows when
    * pickled jalapenos - bought who knows when
    * plum sauce - didnt even know we had it!
    * jar o'mystery sauce
    * 3x rotting tomatoes
    * mangled, mushy and rotting 3" section cucumber
    * another bundle of flyers - approx 23

These, I discovered empty while doing laundry:

    * empty bottle of laundry detergent
    * empty box from dyer sheets

    Adding 34 items

    Total Flung To Date: 370

this afternoon it was hard core purging and cleaning in the basement. we spent a lot of time going through my dad's old stuff and we have gotten rid of tons of things. we took out 3 garbages and dh has taken 1 huge box (old barbies, slipcovers, crap, crap, and more crap, cookbooks, games), 1 medium box, and 1 tv to value village. all in all i think about 150 things. the basement is starting to slowly feel like a liveable space instead of a pit of crap.

150 things out the door! 467 things out of our life!

    1545 things to go!!!!!!!
