2012 - Use It Up/Waste Not Challenge
I've seen this challenge in the years past but haven't seen this posted for the new year.
Can a mod please make this thread a sticky?
Who's in to see how much we can use up so we don't waste this year?
Today, I used up:
* bottle of body wash
* tube of hair conditioner
* 2 different bags of coffee beans
* tube of face cream

Spatula'ed out the jar of PB - enough for two whole slices of bread with generous coverage! A knife wasn't able to scrape that much out

Now that we're trying *not* to build up our stockpile too much, I find it even more important to use up everything b/c we may not be buying it again for a while. Time to make every penny count!

I like this type of challenge. I usually try to use up just about everything even if it means giving some away before it goes bad. March 1, I guess, will be my official 'tracking' start date as that was just yesterday. I did have to pour out about a pint of milk from the gallon we had that went bad yesterday and I also fed the ducks at the little lake not too far from our house the leftover breads (better them than the trash can).
Today, I finished up the remainder of a jar of salsa in a recipe that dh really likes.

Yesterday for dinner dh had a frozen homemade TV dinner that used up leftover chicken, mashed potatoes, corn nuggets and green beans.
Yesterday I finished up a sample size toothpaste that had been sitting on the bathroom shelf half-used since our vacation. I actually got 3 days worth out of that tiny tube. Dh finished up his shaving cream this morning and pulled the last one from under the sink. Time to put that on the hba list.
I finished up an OTC allergy med 2 days ago that had been around here for months when dh only needed 2-3. I checked the exp date and it was still good. So glad I looked around first before going to the drug store this time. Normally, I don't. I forget what I have around here. My allergies have been kicking up something awful this winter (probably the warmer than normal weather).

I think my allergies haven't left b/c winter never settled in here and now spring is on its way!
I found an old box of 'stuff' from when DH moved in and there were a whole slew of toiletry items. Some expired, some still good for a while. We have more then enough to work through now that the box has been sorted. I'll be trying to use that up next.
last of the granular splenda for baking

Finally finished up a tube of specialty hand cream - had snipped it in half and was scooping it out. There was A LOT left in there that wasn't able to be squeezed out!

Made bread crumbs from stale buns. I guess that's not really used up though.
Used half a green pepper that has been around a while.
Made yogurt cheese from some outdated yogurt, then used up some French herb rub making several packages of dips and froze them. Guess those aren't really gone either.
Used some yogurt that's been in the freezer a while, making banana bars with give-away bananas that needed to be used.
Made Parmesan cheese crackers with some Parmesan that's been hanging around a couple of years.
Used up half a jar of sauerkraut, some corned beef I didn't know was in the freezer, and some frozen Swiss cheese that's been around too long and made Reuben sandwiches.
Used some pickled peppers that have been in the fridge a year or so. Good thing this stuff has a long shelf life.

Used a small hotel bottle of shampoo and conditioner and finished up a larger bottle of shampoo. Although I shouldn't have used any of these because I have color treated hair and these were not for color treated hair. I just wanted them outta the shower stall.

I'm using up all the little odds and ends of things also. Like a lot of you, shampoo and conditioner. Usually when the shampoo is out, even if the conditioner is not, I buy both. Not this last time, I only bought shampoo, I have 4 bottles of conditioner with less than 1/4 in them, so I'm using those all up. Also trying to use up some hand cream and body lotion and all of my miscellaneous cleaning supples. Where do they all come from anyway?
