I smoked a fatty in the Cobb tonight. This is my Cobb and my pic, but not my fatty, in case you find yourself in need of a visual aid.

It was like I had never cooked before. Dang! The first thing that went wrong was I put the smoke pellets in the cast iron smoker box and then forgot to put it in with the coals. That wasn't so bad since we were using hickory charcoal so I just let that go. But it got worse.

Then the starter we used was too big so we had to fish that out from under the basket with the live coals in it and drag it out to the driveway where it wouldn't set the deck on fire. Stupid me put the coal basket in the upside down lid of the Cobb while we dealt with the starter and melted the plastic knob on the top of the lid. This is a $350 cooking system and I melted the dang knob! I'm still kicking myself. It seems to work okay but it doesn't look too nice anymore.

I was looking at the fatty and accidentally left a potholder on the lid when I put it back on, and of course the heat through the vent holes burned the potholder. It was a pretty nice potholder, too.

The fatty didn't seem to be cooking like it should, so genius me decided to add more coals. Of course I added too much and the grill that has never flared up in its life started to flare.

Then the bottom of the fatty started to burn and it was far from done. So after a while of this nonsense with the flaring and the bacon burning, I decided to finish it off in the oven in the house. I carried it in on the grill (cooking surface), but put the lid on the grill base so no sparks would escape and set fire to the deck. I was shoving the fatty in the oven when I realized not having the grill (cooking surface) in the Cobb would make the top of the dome cover too hot, and that would melt the knob again. Sure enough.

I rescued the poor knob and went back in to deal with the fatty, only to realize the lowest rack in the oven was too low and the next one up was too high. And the bacon was splattering all over the oven. Now that's a giant mess, but at least the top element in the oven didn't set the bacon on fire, luckily.

The stupid thing was finally done, and my reward for all this aggravation was a beautiful, perfectly cooked fatty with a really pretty quarter inch smoke ring. The bottom wasn't burned after all, and the fatty (pizza fatty this time) was delicious. We have enough left for two or three more meals, so we'll be enjoying that most of this week.

It's embarrassing when I forget how to cook. But I've never had a fatty failure and I'm glad tonight wasn't the first time. Dang, that was good, and so pretty with that big pink smoke ring.

I'm going to ask my mom to sell me her Cobb. She's had it for years and I don't think she's ever used it. Cobb USA has been out of business for several years now and there's nowhere to get parts anymore, so I want Mom's Cobb for the parts. We have two Cobbs and I live in fear of losing something or damaging it so badly it makes one or both of them unusable. Maybe she'll give it to me for Christmas.

OMG!! SD that is not Detroit language. Smoking a fatty is Soooo diff. lol Here you need a 40 w/ your shorty! lol hint no steak involved.lol

Pinetree-calm yourself. This dog was infected long before, about 6 months. Hw-the female worm can be 14" long and once they all start to die the masses can cause an embolism. I must crate this dog for a month straight w/ the exception of leash potty breaks. He is not to get jumping or anything that will increase his heart rate. Easier said than done.Thats why I am requesting a light sedative for him. We have stopped the increase w/ an antibiotic called Doxycycline. He howls if someone isnt w/ him now. I am going to buy him a bed tomorrow and practice crating again. The month we had him he has slept w/ us. Things will go as they will. We will do our best. He was sick when I got him.

FW2--I am a pet lover, too. Hang in there. My old lab has a seizure like thing where he can't stand up. I calm him down and he then is okay. This last time; however, he developed a fatted tumor on his back or it could be some kind of muscle thing.

Pinetree--Keep us posted on the baby. Babies are on their own schedules. lol

Spirit Deer--Smoking a fatty in my neck of the woods has a different denotation.

Went to bed with extreme pressure last night, but feel better today.
    Today:
    1) Cut coupons and find deals
    2)Dead head flowers in flowerbed.
    3) Work on needlepoint

I need a haircut, but don't know when that will happen. I might get DH to help me pick a bucket of pears to take to the food pantry tomorrow. Dinner will be: scalloped potatoes, steamed broccoli, baked chicken breasts, and pear crisp. Have a great day. Going to be in the 80s here today due to a cold front. Gotta love Texas weather.

om, that is wonderful about Addie! How is Paige?

Gbug, does the pressure get worse if you don't keep your head level? Sometimes when I hang my head down, like when cleaning under things, it seems like the pressure rushes to my forehead.

I loved your comment about "smoking a fatty"! ROFL

pinetree, sounds like the party was great! And delicious! Thanks for the info about the PB.

SD, what is a fatty? I've inferred that it's meat, but can you tell me more?

fw, hope everything goes well with Hunter. He's blessed that he has you.

    Niko, praying for you.

Everybody else, hi, and hope things are well with you.

    For Monday:

    1) Financial stuff with DH DONE
    2) Fold/put away clean laundry and pet blankets
    3) Bible study 6:30
    4) Vacuum up the pet hair downstairs
    5) Clean litter box

    Have a good one, ladies.

OM-congrats grandma!! Dont let this other thing over shadow it!
Gb-I am just overwhelmed w/ pets right now. My oldie cat needs to go back and get his glucose rechecked for hyperthyroid and I have 3 more to vaccinate plus Hunters "issues". Now that the antibiotics are done his energy level is rising too!
I hope they get your health issues nailed down better. DH had high intereye pressure and lost the sight in the 1 from it. He takes Xylatan drops and has for years since they were new.

Did I say DH got his prelim. report on his leg? He got the report off the website for his primary physician. The specialist for ortho is out of the country until the 27th. But It seems ther is no abcess and all the hardware is in place. They are watching residual calcium deposits and high scar areas. It would seem a tissue infection not the bone as DH feared. so,so far,so good.

Going to the garbage service today and ask what the deal is. I paid for a full year last year and they havent billed me again. Pretty sure I'm overdue??? It's a multimillion dollar rinky dink hometown service. The invoices are made by the grandson. DD went to school w/ him and no sharp tools in his shed! I hate chasing down people to beg them to take my money. When you want them to pick up large furniture you have to pay so you put the money in an envelope taped inside the lid. I'm serious. I think they finally let you pay by CC over the phone as of last year.

So Dh is wrestling w/ himself on the car. The black older one sold and now they wont come down on the red one. He was like No its too much. I pretend choked him. Told him to go buy the dang thing. Its the out of work thing. But I am not a vacillator and I have no patience.

Got a load of DW dishes going and 1 laod of clothes and 1 to put away.
Going to throw meatball in later but need to go to the Garbage service now.

pt-mosquitos. and people dont use preventative on their pets. Sorry typing around Mia. Didnt think you thought I did anything.
And i still am more city about stuff. When I 1st moved out here it was that was but 21 yrs. later? When I 1st came checks were taken w/ no ID. Cars werent locked etc. It wasnt uncommon to be late somewhere because you got stuck behind a tractor. But not now pelase. A few grills are open lunch and bvreakfast only but their doing a retirement business (part hobby). Several businesses closed a bit ago so people could go to the state troopers funeral. That was unexpected but right IMHO.
I feel like Dh wants me to buy the car so he doesnt have too lol sometimes he is so cheap.

Sorry I don't have the time or the attention spam to read all of the posts. I will get back to you later when I have more time and energy. But just as Niko, Im still alive.

OM, that's great about the baby!

FW, that sounds encouraging about your husband's leg. I hope he can get it cleared up soon.

The fatty we had was hamburger stuffed with pizza ingredients, mozzarella, pepperoni, olives, basil, oregano, stuff like that. Then it's rolled up like a jelly roll and wrapped in bacon and smoked. I used to do the full bacon weave but decided to go with half the cost because I use the best bacon or why bother, and half the calories because who needs them, so I just wrapped each slice around the meat jelly roll. So dang tasty! I have another fatty in the freezer, too. I think it's a Reuben. Google 'bacon explosion' and you'll get the original recipe. I've never made that version. There are endless recipes for fatties.

I've had great luck smoking stuff in the Cobb. I'm not sure what went wrong last night. I have the smoker box I got at GW Saturday and could have used the POC Charbroil grill, but I figured I'd have less trouble with the Cobb. Silly me.

I just had lunch, at four PM! It's been a busy day. Not a lot done but it was time consuming. I finished the second salvaged drawer on the back porch cabinet, and they will no longer be as 'the salvaged drawers' just 'the drawers'. I moved the sink base into the back porch after moving a bunch of stuff to make room, and put on one of the doors and put the drawers where they belong. Nice to have drawers where there were none before. I didn't put the second door on because I haven't screwed the two cabinets together yet. I located some scraps of baseboard that will be enough to finish off the back porch, which is great since we can't buy the original stuff anymore. I'll have to piece it but it's better than having it mismatched. I moved back the little cabinet I had to move and sorted some stuff and put everything back. It looks better out there. I haven't moved much into the cabinets yet because of not having them connected, but soon. At least the cabinets are out of the family room now and into their permanent spot.

Then I went out to my office and did some stuff out there. There was a bear there last night. I had one of those L-shaped steel shelf brackets holding up a platform with the feeder sitting on it, and the L bracket is bent right in half against the pole. The feeder's on the ground. I didn't retrieve it yet, but it looks okay. The base of the hanging feeder is ripped off the feeder, but the feeder seems okay and I think I can reattach the base. Stupid bear. I thought I heard something on the front deck in the middle of the night and it was probably the bear, but we had pulled the feeders in so I only heard the one thump.

I brought in a can of paint to paint the new wood supports I built for the awning legs on the side deck, but it's ruined so that's ready for the trash now. I got some more paint and painted the supports. Another coat and those can be installed soon. It'll be great to scratch that off the list because we hung the awning on the house a year ago but haven't been able to use it due to the legs not being attached correctly.

I finished cleaning up the Cobb, always fun after a smoke.

I test-drove the 'new' microwave in my office and really like it. I'm glad now it didn't sell on the sale, which still surprises me. It looks new and we only had $10 on it. You'd think someone would have wanted it. But it worked out for me even though I didn't think I wanted it. I guess it was meant to be mine.

I often wonder what people who have thrown away things like that microwave would think if they knew it had a whole new life now.

Rainy day here. That's good, we need it. Hope it clears up by the weekend though so we can get the dock in. We keep planning to do that and then we run away from home and are either gone or too tired the next day to get it done.

The weather was so weird today. It was sunny fall and I came out of Big Lots w/ Hunters new bed and it looked like a great storm was hitting complete w/ pressure drop. Went home and got Dh for his haircut left and it was sunny. Went to test drive the car and the wind started blowing and I had to get a sweater from the van. Driving home it sprinkled but never rained. Viva la Michigan!

I will know tomorrow if Dh get his new shiny car. I actually disclosed all I had squirreled away when we walked through Dunhams. I shocked him.

    so today
    2 loads w/ a third to dry
    DW unloaded
    DH haircut
    car shopping
    hunters bed from Big lot
Sent a lady to our dog rescue from Pet supplies plus.
played w/ Hunter and took him in the car
Took Mackey to get a burger
Took DH to get a sub lol
