I was going to recommend the small lego sets. If he is on the younger side, I often will get a pack of crayons & a coloring book to go with whatever I've purchased.
Temporary tatoos are always a big hit at my house.

Coloring Books are a good idea! Thanks! I really just need something small to go with the gift I am mailing so the legos won't work... but i am also looking for cheap gift ideas in general so thanks! (DH has over 10 nieces & nephews!)
I've picked up some great stuff at tag sales, but I end up giving them to the kids when they come over!

If you keep your eyes open you can find small RC cars for $10 or less.
Stop trying to organize all of your family’s crap. If organization worked for you, you’d have rocked it by now. It’s time to ditch stuff and de-crapify your world.
If you're not using the stuff in your home, get rid of it. You're not going to start using it more by shoving it into a closet.

the dollar store has tons of markers crayons and colorng books and small puzzles which dont weigh alot.
i agree w/ the poster on temporary tattoos! kids just seem to LOVE those!!!
at the dollar store you can also pick up those foam stickon thingies which kids love too. those and some cheap construction paper are good for at least two hrs of fun time!

I ended up sending the mario puzzle ($12 on clearance for $5), a box of candy, $5 in McDonalds gift certificates. He loved it and I only spent $11 plus shipping.
Our budget is $20/ kid, and yes I think that is too high, but when you do things last minute, $20 does not go very far. I would like to get that down to $10/ kid.
