Dollar store food -what to buy, what to avoid
I've managed to cut my grocery bill quite a lot but most of that was "easy" stuff like cutting out unnecessary snack items and "time-saving" prepared items that I now make in batches and freeze. The other day, I took a look at the food items available at my local dollar store. I was surprised by the selection (don't often go to the dollar store) but I'm not so sure of the quality/safety.
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts and recommendations before I start picking items up there. I realize that at $1, it's not a lot of money to lose to try something but still, $1 is $1. If it helps, the dollar store I go to is a Dollarama (Canadian).
Thanks in advance!!

I think it would depend. If DH wasn't working, I'd probably eat it. As it is, I only buy name brands at the dollar store or other big lot/salvage stores. Not because of anything other than safety concerns! On the other hand, being a name brand certainly hasn't helped in the past few food recalls!
I guess if you're nervous about it, I'd look at the FDA recall site regularly. (I try to.)
The FDA site can be found here:
