Thumbs up Shelf Life of various foods

I don't know if this has been posted here or not, but I just found a website that you can enter any given food, beverage, spice, etc and it will tell you the shelf life, as well as the best way to store that food item. I thought this was great!

If you are not familiar with the appearance and taste of food, I am sure that would be helpful. ;-) When does milk go bad? When it smells bad or tastes funny! Who needs a date to know that? Have you ever had a raw, refrigerated egg go bad? I haven't. I know we liberated several dozen eggs that had been in DH's deceased grandpa's frig for 4-6 months. They were all fine.

When are fruit and vegies no good to eat? When they get mushy or moldy. When is cottage cheese bad? When it is moldy or smelly or tastes funny! You get my drift. You can tell when most food is bad by looking or smelling. Why throw away good food because somebody you don't know made up an imaginary length of time the food was "good."

I find the length of time that refrigerated foods stay good to be much shorter on that web site than my experience had shown me to be the case.

    Nice link MrsOcean.

I've taught classes on Safe Home Food Storage and one thing I noted from class participants is how many people don't know the temperature of their refrigerator/s or freezer/s, and that has a direct effect on how long foods keep in them.

There are a number of other sites that are along the same line at this link that may be helpful to someone.

Well, mrs.ocean,I for one appreciate the link. I always worry about saving food after the exp. date esp. if it has a lot of ing. that could go rancid. Esp. since my male teen and his friends eat anything that isn't faster than them.LOL
I copuld not get this lonk to save to my favorites though??

Thanks!!! This will come in handy when I am staring at my overstocked pantry wondering about expiration dates. And yet the compulsion to stock up more is still there.
