Default Anyone else pulling out the ...

trusty food dehydrator? I did tonight. I had an abundance of elephant garlic and green onions. So I will dehydrate those and put them away for use with soups, etc.

I'd like to hit the farmers market this weekend and get some other things, maybe hit the stores and see what i can find for fruit. We like to dehydrate strawberries, apples and bananas. We make fruit chips from them. And in the winter we've dehydrated frozen fruits for chips too. Works fine. And if you crumble say...strawberry chips into a basic muffin mix or pancake mix...yum! Even in a white cake mix it is awesome.

I'd like to do some canning too. there were some wonderful cherries at the grocery store this last week. Strawberries too. Maybe i will go later this week for that.

Anyone can cherries? how do you do yours?

What do you dehydrate? how do you use it afterwards?

Missy, thanks for the reminder! I'd completely forgotten about the dehydrator this year.

I'm planning on heading to the farmer's markets this weekend so I guess I'll have to watch for some things to dehydrate too.

Mmmm, my apples are pathetically small this year too. The only good thing is that they don't seem to be as scabby and wormy as last year.

i love my food dehydrator. I am going to hit the potatoes and onions at veg. stands in a few weeks. You can get HUGE bags of potatoes, fresh, for really cheap, and onions. I use them until I think i might not finish them off, then dehydrate them. Soups, stews, au gratin potatoes, etc. I also do local fruit. A lot of people have trees, and don't come close to using it all, and are only too happy to give it away so they don't have to rake as much rotten fruit up from their yards.

peel (or don't) slice them, steam them a little bit, rinse, then dehydrate. Reconstitute them, or just make scalloped potatoes, with some extra water.

I have owned a food dehydrator for many years but only used it a handful of times. It's shameful I know, but I just don't really know what to do with it. I don't buy a lot of things that I think can be dehydrated. So, here's my question. Occasionally I get bananas and don't finish them all. Can I freeze them, then thaw and dehydrate them when I have enough to do a batch? That goes for other fruits and veggies too.
