    Default Frugal Fabric Softener?

I am almost out of fabric softener and no money til payday. Can I use vinegar? Seems like I read somewhere it acts as a fabric softener.

yep use vinegar. if you have a downy ball, put the vinegar in that then toss it into teh washer.

to make your fabric softener last longer try this:
mix 1 part liquid fab. softener in a spray bottle with 2-3 parts water. ( i use 2 parts in the winter and 3 parts in the summer)
shake up then spray on a wash cloth and toss it int eh dryer like a dryer sheet.
you have to use the sam ewash cloth over and over, or switch between a couple of wash clothes set aside just for this purpose because the fabric softener will make the wash cloth so it won't absorb water anymore.

cheryl, the clothes will smell of vinegar when they come out of the washing machine, but it will fade as the clothes dry.

or dilute your liquid fabric softener as above, but store it in an old margarine tub and use a sponge instead of a washcloth.

i did the sponge thing for a while, but don't have a sink near enough by to wash my hands off so went to using a wash cloth and spray bottle.

    both methods work well though

    Smile Homemade Fabric Softener Recipe

    Homemade Fabric Softener Recipe:

    1 part Vinegar
    1 part Baking Soda
    2 parts Hot Water

Place a pail large enough to hold double the amount of ingredients in the kitchen sink or bathtub. Mix the baking soda and water in the pail, stir till the powder is dissolved. Then add the vinegar. Remember that baking soda and vinegar reacts with fizzing, so use a big pail to account for this. Once it’s stopped fizzing, pour into clean bottles, cap, then use 1/4 cup per rinse cycle.

Question Does anyone use vinegar as fabric softener?

I heard it is supposed to work, but don't want to have to rewash a couple loads of clothing if it doesn't. My aunt told me to just throw a cup of white vinegar in the wash during the spin cycle.

    Any thoughts?

I read that about white vinegar in one of the frugal books that I have. Haven't tried it though. Seems like while I am washing I've got a zillion other things to do besides running back and forth trying to catch the rinse cycle.

I do and it works great. The first load or two your clothes might smell a little vinegarish, but once you get all that extra soap out of your clothes it will be fine. Also once they are dry they wont smell.

put it in a downy ball at the begining of the wash. i've been meaning to switch to nothing but vinegar (right now i dilute my liquid with it) but i'm going to use up all my store bought softener first.

yep, add it to a downey ball or try it in the fabric softener dispenser if your machine has one.
the smell does go away as the clothes dry.
