Default Need help w/ stain removal

Lately, I have lucked into several vintage linens at the thrift store.

A small heavy cotton tablecloth. About 45" square. Pure white.
Three white napkins with crocheted borders.
Another heavy cotton tablecloth, about the same size, with a printed red-and-blue border pattern.
A small embroidered tablecloth that feels like it could be linen.

    All of these are stained.

I tried washing the pure white items, but, except for the napkins, stains remain.

How would you remove the stains?

I will admit that I had a pleasant surprise with the worst-stained napkin. I put Shout on the stain and washed it in Hot. Stain (coffee?) was still there after the napkin came out of the wash. But I hung it out to dry anyway, and LEFT it on the line. For about 2 days. I can't find the stain anymore. I have heard that the sun will bleach out stains, but I had never experienced it before.

    Early bird,
I was going to suggest that you put Lemon juice on the stain and hang in the sun. I have heard the same thing about sun, but combine it with lemon juice. On the other hand, if you can't remove that stain, then maybe tea or coffee dye it to antique it and match up as good as possible.
Also, you could try talking to the head curator at your local museum about stain removal and preservation tips.
    Good luck!

I got some of the oxiclean prewash and after trying the lemon juice and salt rub, hung the tablecloth in the sun (which helped quite a bit actually), I washed in hot water with oxiclean. Then I pretreated the stain again with the oxiclean pretreat and washed it again, letting it soak in more oxiclean in hot water. That actually got most of the stain out. You can barely see it anymore. WTG on your finds.

I'll add oxyclean prewash to my shopping list!

Yes, I'm pretty thrilled. Spent about $6 for all of them, very likely because of the stains.

How about a Fels Naptha bar? It's like a bar of soap that you rub into the stain and then launder. You can get them at the grocery store.

I didn't think about Fels Naptha. Good call Cricket1. My mom told me that whenever she had a stain she couldn't get out she would send it to my grandma. Grandma almost always got it out. She used Fels Naptha quite a lot.
