Default ** Break One ** -- **Make One**... Challenge.....

    HABITS

    -- we all have them...good ones...bad ones.....

the challenge for 2010 is to break some break habits and replace them with good habits....starting one habit at a time....
    .
.so won't you join me in this challenge....these aren't resolutions...we aren't piling a bunch of 'good intentions' upon ourselves so that we can quickly become over-whelmed and just abandon them all...

    no...this is not a sprint....this is a marathon.....

good habits take time to take ahold...bad habits die hard....

** last year i began with the elimination of shopping..(bad habit)
and i replaced it with saving...(good habit)

** i stopped using my credit cards all together..(bad habit)
and i replaced purchasing power with cash..(good habit)

** i stopped taking utilities for granted..(bad habit)
by making sacrifices my reward is lower bills..(good habit)

    ** i stopped being a 'compliant consumer'..(bad habit)
and now appreciate all that i already own..(good habit)

** i quit walking thru life with my eyes closed..(bad habit)
i am now fully wide awake and aware..(good habit)

    so now its 2010:

and i am ready to up the ante....i am working on ME..one bad habit at a time....starting with:

** to stop 'woofing' down my food when i eat..(bad habit)
to taking my time by savoring what i am eating..(good habit)

** to get out of the cooking rut that i have gotten in..(bad habit)
to get a little more creative in the kitchen..(good habit)

** to stop with all the candy and snacks..(really really bad habit)
to snacking on more wholesome choices..(good habit)

** to stop becoming more and more lazy as i age..(bad habit)
to get back up and moving in a big way..(good habit)

** to get out of my 'rags' at least a couple x's a week (even if i have nowhere to go)..(bad habit)
to taking more pride in my day to day appearance (even when i have nowhere to go..(good habit)

Those are my goals for now...i don't expect them all to happen overnight...and i imagine that there will be failures from time to time, but i am up to the challenge to work them on a day-to day basis....i will have good days...i will have bad....but at least i will be trying, and in the end, that's all i can ask for....

anyone want to come along with me for the ride ????

I like this. They say it takes 30 days to change a habit. We will see. I need to stop eating and drinking sooooo much sugar. Really afraid of the caffeine depravation HEADACHES.
I'm not much of a fruit eater; but I need to start eating more fruit and vegetables. I also need to start eating breakfast.
I also need to keep the exercise up. And after tallying up how much I spent paying off credit card bills; no interest though; (too much shopping)

    Great challenge SS!

I will join you but I have to think which bad habits I want to tackle first. I want this to be quite painless at first so I am successful and then get tough with myself!

Will list them after I decide which ones first.

    Thanks!

the whole idea behind this is to take one bad habit...(like the sugar) and replace it with one good habit..(like eating fruit instead..or something good for you)...

tackle the bad habits one at a time...don't just list all your bad habits and say i will break all these coz they are bad....(that's where the 'experts' say we will fail)....

have a clear defined good habit to immediately replace the bad habit evertime you find yourself partaking in that bad habit....

a list is good...but keep it where you can access it when you feel the 'badness' coming on....then...switch gears and consult your list and immediately do the 'good' habit....

Interesting idea SVS - and one that makes a great deal of sense too!!

I am replacing diet soda with water, iced tea or lemonade.

I am replacing no physical activity with various forms of physical activity daily including physical therrapy exercises, bike riding, strolling or water exercises.

I am replacing negative thoughts about myself with positive ones.

That's plenty on my plate and are the most important to me!!

Mahalo for adding an interesting approach to 2010!!

Great challenge, I did something similar one year with just frugal activities. I found it took about two weeks to form a habit.

I'd like to break my slob habit, but it's going to take a few steps. I'll start with making my bed and putting on clothes when I get up.

I'll pick the next step on e I have those mastered.

I *would* like to break my habit of using my debit card. I have been thinking of setting up the jar system to try this month. Not sure what the good habit would be to replace it though.

how about every time you want to whip out the debit card...
    whip out cash instead......

(will require you to carry a little more cash at all times...)...plus cash hurts worse when you have to spend it...might make you re-think a purchase or two...

That doesn't really give me INCENTIVE, though.

I think I'm going to do it this way:

    BAD HABIT: paying with plastic
GOOD HABIT to replace: paying with cash
Way to break it: Every time I pay with plastic ANYWHERE, I have to deduct 10% of the purchase from my grocery fund and put that in EF.

BAD HABIT: Leaving clutter instead of dealing with it, even when I notice it
GOOD HABIT: Picking up the clutter before it becomes clutter
Way to break it: Every day I notice clutter and don't deal with it immediately, I have to fling 10 items within 24 hours.

that is a good incentive....when i started the challenge to myself last month about saving .25 for every dollar i spent i actually walked away from a few purchases (ahem...candy...)...because i reasoned that ONE--besides that fact that i did not NEED it... but that $1 bag of candy was in essence going to cost me 1.25..(even though that .25 was going into savings funds)...it was still LESS money i would have to spend on other things more important that i really may have needed....while its only a .25...multiply that by a dozen times a month and it starts to really rack up....

    Here's a start.

Bad habit - oblivious to power consumption
Good habit - start keeping track and unplug

    Bad habit - credit card purchases ( I don't do a lot
but want to cut out all except my car insurance....that's the only way I can make payments with this insurance and they are the lowest with the best coverage)
Good habit - only use cash and if I don't have the cash then I can't buy the item!)

    Will come back for more.

i haven't bought any candy since the day after x-mas..(1 bag of twizzlers)....

i haven't done too well on the exercise thing...being cold makes me lazy...(you would think i would move to stay warm)... working on this one though....

actually took a shower this morning....haha.... this one has been hard too considering we hung around the house since new yrs day...so none of those days counted...i was supposed to stay in my jammies then... but today...i put 'clean' sweats on...weehee....

This is a good idea. I have one habit I am trying really hard to break..

Bad Habit: Thinking negative thoughts throughout the day about various aspects of work and my personal life
Good Habit: Being more optimistic each day

Advantage: Better disposition and possibly less stress.

I don't know if it will work...but I will try.
