My main goal for 2014 is to cook as much from scratch as possible. I want to use less creamed soups and mixes from boxes and make it right from scratch.

There will be big changes in 2014 for me and I will be needing to save as much as possible. This will be the perfect thread for me.

I don't know if I'll get one thing done every month, but there are improvements I need to make in the coming year.

I need to make more things from scratch, too, although I do quite a bit now.

I need to continue experimenting with more canning.

I need to put in a garden again this year and try to increase and improve our garden areas.

I need to continue decluttering and organizing our house, cabin, and garage.

It'll be interesting to look back on this thread and see what I have accomplished or not as 2015 approaches.

I would like to make more of my daughters snacks from scratch (goldfish, fruit snacks, ritz crackers, graham crackers). I would also like to actually learn to use the sewing machine thats been sitting in a box the last 3 years!

Kitkat, your girls are just little, so maybe you'd like to try making pillowcase dresses for them. Google for instructions. That would be a simple project for you to start with, the pillowcases can be had inexpensively at garage sales and thrift stores, and your girls are little enough that even if you make mistakes, they'll still be so thrilled that Mama made them pretty dresses.

Where to start!?!? Here are a few things I would like to learn or learn to do better:
~ Like many of you, I want to start making more things from scratch and hand-in-hand with this, I want to move our family toward eating less processed stuff and more whole or natural stuff.
~ Learn to make bread from scratch
~ Develop and harvest a successful container garden
~ Create a simpler, homemade-focused Christmas 2014 for my family.

I don't think I'll make a long list of things to do, but play it by ear month by month instead. I don't know if tatting is considered a homesteading skill, but for January I want to improve my tatting skills.

Oh yes, SD, tatting is definitely a homesteading skill. I too am not aiming for a month to month goal but rather to fine tune the skills I do have and then add to them as ideas come up.

I need to do this on a month by month basis due to my work schedule and travel required. January I will be on the road for the majority of the month but during the time I am home, my goal is to cook from scratch! (I am kicking myself for buying a prepared graham cracker crust when I could have easily made it from items already in my pantry in just a few minutes at less than half the cost.......UGH.....) So Jan 2014 is the month of from scratch cooking for me!

If you get stuck, Nodmicks, check YouTube for videos showing how to do most any stitch you're wondering about. Fantastic resource.

I used to bake bread but it fell by the wayside years ago. Now that I'm retired I want to get back to it. I think I may make homemade pasta too. Already I do most of our desserts from scratch.

Another thing I need to do is some basic sewing. I would like to get a simple, inexpensive sewing machine and learn to use it to make curtains, etc., using inexpensive fabrics. I am open to suggestions as to sewing machine recommendations.

I need to get into my canning, I still haven't used my pressure canner, I want to start canning meat, and stews.
This years garden hopefully will be bigger and everything will be canned or frozen from it. We were hoping to plant pinto or butter beans.
Cooking from scratch is high on the list also. Dh got a pasta maker for Christmas, so would like to learn that too.
