Smile It pays to clean out the pantry from time to time

I did some serious deep cleaning most of the day around the house. Amazing what I found that I had in my pantry that I didn't think I had! Even stuff that I had bought but because it was hiding in the back, I thought I was out. Now it's super tidy again.

If you have ever seen the movie Sleeping with the Enemy-that is how it looks now. Everything perfectly lined up. Well until the kids and dh get into it.

Nothing like finding some great 'edible' treasures!

Haha, I thought I was the only one. I've always had to have cans lined up with the labels facing the same way. heh

Yep, I almost got a whole week of menus planned in my head just from what I have on hand.

My tea is all condensed and organized on the top shelf.

Seriously, I found those mini raisin boxes stuck in my chrystal light plastic container. (thought I was out of both) I wonder who to blame for that one. lol TEEN!

My kids once about 10 years ago, cleaned out Grandma's pantry when she was recovering from surgery. They found a box of Jello with a price tag on it (no bar code) and with an expiration date of 1963!!!
She was ticked 'cause she 'couldn't find anything' when they got done. Yes she was a packrat. And yes, I have my labels all facing the same firection, too!!

I always liked playing store as a kid, and home food storage is my adult opportunity I guess.

I'm a basket case, that is, baskets for dividing and storing foods. I find it easier having like-kinds of things together. That way I can pull out the basket to find or add something. Not as many "hidden treasures" getting lost. I divide food in the freezer in small plastic baskets. I keep cans of frozen juice in a pop can dispenser in the freezer so they are easy to add (at the top), and the oldest is the first dispensed from the bottom.

Friends of ours were helping her elderly mother do some cleaning, which included the refrigerator. They noticed all the salad dressing bottles had expiration dates that were all very old, so they tossed them and got her new ones. The mom was horrified by the waste. So now she scratches the use-by dates off so that won't happen again.... I'll have to tell them about the 1963 Jell-O (LOL). They'll get a hoot out of that story.

I just did this a few weeks ago. I try to do it every 3 or 4 months, it's amazing what you can find! Great idea on the meal planning!
