I love Kentucky. In fact I visited this past summer and had a wonderful time. The people of Kentucky are very gracious and welcoming.

I attended the unveiling of the Secretariat statue at the Kentucky Horse Park. It was a very personal pilgrammage. I had followed Secretariat since I was a teenager and, although I had never had an opportunity to see him in person, seeing his likeness in that gorgeous statue was very meaningful to me. I visited his grave and placed flowers from the previous day's event at his stone. He is my hero, and I was glad to finally pay my respects.

I left to come home very early one morning and the Bluegrass Region was blanketed in that hauntingly beautiful mist that is unique to the region. The sun was shining brightly behind the mist but through the screen of the water droplets it looked like nothing more than a large orange sphere. A real treat to see the sun in that way. In places the mist broke and you'd see the long fences and horses at pasture, broken only now and then by a gate to an estate. The small towns I passed through appeared as if they were images from the past, having come forth under the cover of the mist, to appear as they once did. It was a serenely beautiful and surreal experience. One I will always cherish. It is the type of experience that explains why Kentuckians love their home so much.
