The really big ones are coming in from outside and don't generally eat or live inside. If you see one or two, just kill them if you can catch up to them. Look for ways to spray and treat around the opening to your home - foundation, doorways and windows.

The smaller German brown loves to live with us and eat in the kitchen. First of all, if you are on a sewer system, call your provider and tell them they have to treat the sewer lines. That is usually how they come into the house and just go from home to home. Some communities have a department called "vector control". You might have to call them.

You also have to quit feeding them. That means cleaning up any exposed food immediately - spraying down counters with cleaner, putting food away in tightly sealed containers (even in the refrigerator), cleaning the stove / oven of spills, not leaving out pet food, make sure there is no standing water (like a water bowl for the cat or even dishes soaking in the sink), and making sure the sink and dishwasher (especially the drains) are squeaky clean. If you have house plants, you might decide to get rid of them until your problem is solved. Don't store ANY fruit, vegetables or bread on the counters out in the open. If you have ANY water leaks (leaky pipes, leaky foundation, leaky roof) deal with them because you'll have more problems than just cockroaches.

After that, you have to treat with gel bait and traps. Even if you think you've solved the problem, continue to use traps and sticky pads to monitor your situation so you have an early warning system if it starts up again.

Be careful about anything you bring into the house (like groceries or used furniture) and store in the house (like cardboard boxes).

Using a cockroach bait is a good method to get rid of the roaches. They are applied as a gel and contains poison mixed with the food that roaches would consume . Another method is using insecticides to prevent reinfestation.

If you live in an apartment, they may just be traveling from one apartment to another....ask the management to treat all the apartments......it may be tough to get rid of them......easier if you live in a house and just have to worry about YOUR house....the german roaches are the toughest to get rid of....but keep at it.....they are nasty......the big ones fly so be careful....they will attack you when you try to kill them so make the first shot, the best shot......good luck.....

Sorry for bumping this, but I decided to ask here instead of making a new thread because this place seems abandoned, oh well. From my experience, I would say that some methods explained on wikihow really work. The most effective one, in my case, was involving bug sprays as mentioned on this page. Though the bigger house requires a bigger spray can, this worked with german cockroaches. But how do you think will this work with american bugs?
