Cats and fleas
I've been having a really hard time with fleas here in my house.
I've tried flea collars, the once a month flea medicines and sprays.
Nothing seems to be working. I cannot afford to bring them to the vets.
Any suggestions? Any tried and true remedies that anyone may have that can be made at home with items already in the house?
Thanks in advance!!

I wish I could be some help, but all I do with my cats (4) is comb them once a month and spray on a non-aersol flea spray. I haven't had any problems at all. The flea spray is one that I picked up at Petco.
I hope you find a remedy soon.

Gina, are your cats indoor cats?

I have 3 that are indoor/outdoor and 1 is strictly indoor.

Thanks anyways Gina.
Both of mine are indoor cats.
My hubby is a service tech and goes into at least 5 different houses 5 or 6 days a week. So, I'm going to guess that he brought them home! lol
Now, I cannot get rid of them.

Have you tried sprinkling Borax on the floors and carpets? Let it sit for a few hours so it gets good and trampled in and it will kill the fleas and eggs that are in the floor or on the furniture. Also sprinkle it around the outside of your home. My in laws do it and we do when we remember and it works great. One of my cats will let us bathe her (Rocky will, Speck will claw your eyes out if she gets near water...lol) but mild dish detergent works to kill fleas as well. I'll bathe Rocky in the oatmeal, flea and tick shampoo that we got for the dog, and also I'll use a pamolive dish wipe. Those I can use on Speck as well. Just get it a little damp and when they are calm and relaxed (almost asleep) just rub them with it. We did the cats and the dogs and it was amazing how many fleas came right off.

Also, make a bowl of soapy water and get a flea comb. Dip the comb in the water and comb them out. The soap kills them. It's tedious, but effective. Maybe if you pair it with the borax, you can get them all!
BTW, are you using Advantage, Frontline, or the Hartz garbage? The spot on the Hartz makes might as well be water! Yes, it is cheaper, but in this case, you deifnitely get what you pay for!
Good luck with the little parasites!

I've tried all but Frontline. They just seem to be getting worse instead of going away!!
It's driving me insane!! lol

Sprinkle Sevin dust on the cat and leave a bowl of milk on the floor on a room with a light on it overnight. The fleas jump in and drown. I don't think you can use the Sevin dust on your carpets but we have used it on pets. Good Luck!

Well, I have borax on my carpets now and I keep trying to wipe them with the palmolive wipes and they are not liking it!!
I'll just keep trying!
Thanks for all the help and advice

Bumping this up for myself and anyone else who might need it- lol!
Our three indoor cats have suddenly gotten fleas- we're not sure how. The best we can figure is that we might have brought them home on our shoes or something- my sister's dog had them recently.
At any rate, we've put the stuff down their backs today and tommorow I'm hoping to treat the carpets. I did a search and found this thread with some homemade remedies to try-- thanks for the ideas!

Since we moved, Speedy's haven't been as bad. We gave her a bath before we moved in here, then one when we got here and then put the flea and tick stuff on her.
She gets another one tomorrow as she smells.....lol
