    Default Emergency preparedness question

So, i'm not nearly as prepared as all the people here, and I don't really have the money or storage space to do so, but living in San Francisco, my roommates and I do have some basics set aside in case of an earthquake.

My question is regarding stored water. When I moved in a couple months ago my roommates had a huge first aid kit, and several jugs of water stored in the pantry. The water was in old plastic containers that had once held other drinks, mostly old juice containers. I'd always heard that putting water in old plastic containers was bad, because the plastic would leech into the water. I'm not sure how long they've had these containers of water or if they replace them periodically, but is this a bad way to store water or in an emergency does it not matter if there's plastic in the water because we (hopefully) wouldn't need to rely on that water for too long.

    Thanks for your help!
